Lightning Strikes Are Bad For Electronics

What happens when lightning strikes across the street from your house?

My day was turned upside down yesterday do to a thunderstorm coming through. I live in an area that is tropical so during the summer we get a lot of thunderstorms coming through. With these storms comes a lot of lightning strikes which can be a nightmare for your electronics. I use surge protectors on all of my valuable electronics to help protect them from being fried from power fluctuations but when lightning strikes close by it doesn't always help.

I was sound asleep yesterday with about an hour and a half to go before it was time for me to wake up when a typical thunderstorm rolled in. Normally this doesn't bother me much, it gets a little loud sometimes but it's usually no big deal. During this storm there was a lightning strike right across the street from my house that the thunder was so loud I literally woke up from jumping a few inches off my bed. While this tends to get the heart rate up a bit it really didn't take me much time to get back to sleep unaware of any situation the strike has caused.

On the weekends my time is limited because this is when I put in the most hours working offline. Over Friday, Saturday and Sunday I normally put in at least thirty hours so this doesn't leave a lot of time to get everything done online and get some proper sleep. When I woke up I discovered that my internet modem was fried from the lightning strike and I had no internet. My modem belongs to my ISP so I didn't have to go buy a new one but I did have to go a trade it out for one that worked. Luckily I had set up almost everything before I went to bed but it still put me behind on the day doing a few thing I needed to work on before heading out to work. I managed to get everything done but not to the level I would have liked to being that I was rushed. These things happen and there is nothing you can do about it, it's not like you can predict when and where lightning is going to strike. It just goes to show that you never know what life is going to throw at you so you need to be ready for anything always adapting to what ever situation that comes your way.
