Have you ever paid attention to what it costs to print the paper or plastic money we use?
It costs quite a lot of money and it's not just a Nigerian thing. The same thing is applicable in many countries. I got to know about this when I studied International Finance and I'm sure that we have alternative ways of holding money which can be explored by the agencies in charge of issuing currency in different countries of the world.
