Farming : A Very Top First Of Its Kind On Hive CHALLENGE || Maize 🌽🌽 Challenge By @felixxx || My Own Participation With All Pictures Used Are Originally Mine.
FARM PROCEDURES AND ROUTINE BEFORE PLANTING MY MAIZE.
- Personally, I always plant Maize throughout the year which means as soon as I harvest a set of maize I leave few weeks close to 4 weeks before I plant another set of maze on the same piece of land. This was how I take my farming activities serious As a career job. So I plant throughout the year which means I you do a lot of artificial irrigation. Wetting of my planted crops. This was how I planted my own maize as its step is shown below.
WEEDING.
- In my own Weeding technique I use the manual tools in wedding which makes it very difficult for me to handle a very wide range of hectares of land. Even though I planted in a very limited area the weeding aspect of it makes it a difficult one which took me two days before weeding and clearing.
When I said the manual tools I mean holes and cutlass likewise the use of rake is applicable too. After cutting all the bushes I took my time to hand weed as well, this is very necessary in this case because I do not want weed competition within few weeks of my planting my crops.
MAIZE PLANTING.
- When choosing your maize you need to choose Wisely this also we attract so many advantages or disadvantages along the line. This is what I mean the advantage will be when you buy your maize seed from a reliable agro allied shop or company this will give you 100% guarantee on what you are planting in the case of viability and also productivity at the end of the planting season.
The viability:
This in my own case is when you plant a healthy maize seed and it is very healthy to germinate within seven days of planting the Maize seed this means that the Maize seed is very viable.
THE PRODUCTIVITY.
This means that at the end of the planting season you have in north of Harvest as corn 🌽🌽 I mean bountiful harvest. This also implies that all your effort from the day one of clearing the land to the harvest period is not in vain. So I planted OBA 98 HYBRID maize which has been in existence for a couple of years back although it is very scared to see unless you book ahead of time or you have it in store.
PLANTING TECHNIQUES AND PLANT RATE.
- I'm going to talk about there's two vital and important stage in planting your maize.
When I planted my own mess I use the method which I was taught 15 years ago by my late dad and also the method I learnt when I was in the university of technology Minna. Niger state. This method is also used nationwide and it is done by digging a hole off two and a half inches down the soil. Then placing Your viable maize seed into the hole and the rate will be 2-3 per hole. This way reduce overcrowding in your maize farm and also it will more productive at the end of the planting season. Even when you are weeding it will be easier for you. Likewise mulching stage.
- The planting of the Maize seed to place as it was shown here in the picture.
And as it grows on the nineth day after planting, it started growing so well and although there are some miss that did not grow I had to do what is called replanting.
Replanting: this is the act of replacing the dead crops when the whole Planting has been done.
THE FERTILIZER APPLICATION.
- Although to some reasonable extent it is not very advisable to use fertilizer when planting your crop but let's take for instance. This is an example. You happen to be a farmer who loves to plant green vegetables and also rare animals but unfortunately for you, you find yourself in another region or vegetative soil where you have a lot of sanding soil hold and behold what will you do? In this case this is what you will do you will definitely try your luck I mean try to plant any kind of crop if it will germinate and as soon as it sprout out you keep an eye on it till its reaches the point at which you can apply a fertiliser that will sustain it for a very long period Of time and also that will enhance and boost its growth and development till it reaches its maturity stage. So this is how you do your Planting and also nurturing till it reaches the maturity stage and you harvest your crop of corn 🌽🌽 in case of maize. So with my little example and story above you will definitely be convinced to use a fertilizer in this case. The fertilizers i used in my own case it was when I find out that the rain has stopped for a couple of days and my maize are growing stunted in shape I don't have any option than to boost this men's at that point in time. I also have poultry droppings but in this case it has not fully reached the stage that I can apply it to any crop at that point in time. So the Poultry droppings is that of it for now at the moment. This was why I went for the fertilizer which is called UREA FERTILIZER.
UREA FERTILIZER.
This is the kind of fertilizer that is used to grow crops most especially green crops or green vegetables even when it reaches 3 weeks-old of planting. But in this case I applied it to maize which as shown the Tassels, Tassels internode and also corn ear. This 3 part of the maize must be sighted before you use urea fertilizer for your maize. this was the method I use at the moment and it is shown down below
- This was how I applied the urea fertilizer. when applying this kind of fertilizer you need to be very careful not to touch any other plants or the leaf with your immediate hand because it will eventually dry off. And this will ruin your maize Farm in the next few days. So you need to take so much precautions and apply it gently. Down below You see Me pointing to the Maize Leaf Sheath ( when applying the urea fertilizer you need to move 5 inches away from the Maize plant which means a few distance away from the maize plant so as for it not to get dried off if it has a very great contact with the main root.)
The urea fertilizer is placed in your palm and you pour it 5 inches away from the plant as said earlier.
- The Urea fertilzer is stretched and poured gently at this point to avoid damage to the main plant and the surrounding leaves.
After I applied the fertilizer I needed to cover the urea fertilizer because of some two reasons.
The number one reason is that to prevent erosion. I would like to simplify and also expanciate on this point. When you carefully apply your fertilizer and you do not cover the fertilizer with soil there might be rain for the next few hours all your job well done will be lost and it will be washed away by erosion. So you need to be aware of this carefully.
Number two reason is that it will enhance the growth and development quickly. When you cover your fertilizer with soil it will boost your plants within few hours and it will start working but when you leave it uncovered you are at risk of wasting your fertilizer.
- This was when I finished the task. Fertilizer application done. It took me two and a half hours to carefully applied the Urea fertilzer and bury it with soil. Which makes it a perfect job well done the next day.
MAIZE HARVESTING.
- Whenever I plant my own maize, the maximum time duration for it to grow and reach its maturity stage is 3 months and half. Within 3 months it will reach its maturity stage then the 15 days is for the harvesting period. this is the more reason why I love to grow my own food. At exact time I know and when to harvest.
WEEDING:
- I weed The Maize Farm regularly twice in a week at least so as to reduce what is called Weed competition among the maize. Sometimes as a farmer you may not have the required time for hand weeding or what is called Manual Weeding. You can use Mount Hand Sprayer instead of using How's and cutlass just like I did.
- The harvesting was done after the 90 days. I love to plant yellow maize as you can see it above.
YELLOW MAIZE 🌽🌽
This was my harvest which I made 5 weeks ago and it was massive. I love the whole Maize Farm because, it was full of fun or true although I encountered some challenges along the line like the wetting of the Maize farm when there was shortage of rainfall for weeks.
- This was the dried maize I left for few weeks before the Final clearing and Harvesting was done. Myself and my baby girl did that work perfectly well.
THE END OF MY MAIZE FARMING SEASON.
WHAT I USED MY YELLOW MAIZE FOR AFTER HARVEST?
- We have so many things we can use the Maize for after harvesting Ada white maize or yellow maize. Both of them can serve the same purposes. And this was what I derived from my own yellow maize. After I have harvested my maize, I boiled some. I used some part of it for Pap Production. I am going to show us how the Pap was maize with yellow maize.
- After harvesting I also went to the extent of sun drying the corn for this purposes. I mixed the yellow corn with the Guinea corn which I poured in clean water for three days. After the third day I went ahead to wash it thoroughly then grind it into Paste as Pap.
- After the third day, i went ahead to grind it with the factory Grinder into paste.
AFTER GRINDING.
You don't Prepare it instantly but you leave it for a day or more before you start to prepay it like a custard. It is called Pap here in Nigeria or Africa. It is consume as breakfast, lunch or dinner.
SECOND FOOD PREPARATION.
- The second food preparation is called mix beans with cooked yellow msize. First and foremost you need to cook the maize. Then add the beans to it to make it done together. It takes a while let's say 25 minutes of cooking.
Raw Material Needed.
- Yellow maize.
- Beans ( either white or brown beans )
- Salt.
- Onions.
- Maggi
- Clean Pot.
- Clean water.
- Wash hand bowl.
- Fire source.
- Chili Pepper.
- Red oil.
You add your salt at first. Then when you test the beans and the maize together, you feel it with your hands and see they are very soft. You add grinded chili pepper, you also add red oil with onions and maggi and cover it up for 10 minutes. You are done.
