Splinterlands - Redemption
An ability that can inflict damage to all opponent's monsters seems to good to be true. To a certain extend it is because down the road of its inception it did not take long before the ability was removed in a card. Post written by @anouk.nox over a year ago with brief discussion about the removal of redemption in Fire Spitter.
The Fire Spitter with Redemption basically had it nerfed a few days into its existence because the card was overpowering. Nerf means a card has to be reduced in its stats and or ability in order to remain in the game. Today we will look specifically at the ability Redemption.
Redemption
When this monster, with redemption, dies, it does 1 melee damage to all enemy monsters.
The ability operates right as the monsters is destroyed from battle field. A way to nullify the ability is that the opponent's monster has shield as the ability will then be directed to toughness prior to any health. This is because the by default melee attacks hit toughness first.
There are interesting combinations a player can operate with in combination with Redemption. For instance Redemption plus Resurrect, where Resurrect will bring back to life one monster that dies in battle. The ability will only be effective once in battle. Imagine a monster that has redemption and dies. It hits all enemy's monsters with 1 melee attack to only be resurrected one more time and do it again in battle.
Although the Fire Spitter had its Redemption removed presently there are 8 cards that still has Redemption as one of its abilities. However only 7 out of the 8 cards can be used in ranked battles while the remainder are only allowed in brawls.
It is worth noting that the card is available for all splinters but only one per splinter. In addition all monsters are low in mana use compare to other abilities so it means likelihood of having to use a monster with Redemption is best use in low health matches. Often lower mana will mean lower stats of the monsters. In turn if Redemption activates the more likelihood it can kill opponents due to their low health stats.
Conclusions
An ability so strong that it is designed to only be allowed one monster per splinter is that of Redemption. The ability was so well placed in a specific card that it got Nerf immediately a few days after it existed. Such tales do not often pop up in the world of Splinterlands. Since developers of the game look very closely at the cards and design them the way they feel is fair for the cards to exist as the way they are.
The best and easiest way to nullify the ability is to make sure your monsters have toughness stat. That way the Redemptions +1 melee hits the toughness instead of the health.
Until next time thanks for reading!!!

I guess they don't have some sort of simulator to run multiple battles on a card set to see if something like this would popup before they released the card.
If I remember correctly there were other cards nerfed as gameplay took place. I can understand this can occur if new cards are added that make combos that tip the scale.
Maybe it would be hard to simulate all the possibilities.
