Splinterlands - Rental Market From A Lender's Perspective

Its been over a month since Chaos Legions cards have circulated and it has really brought down the hammer on rental prices. In much so a lot of my cards are unable to rent out and my total APR % for lending has significantly drop. I am here to break down what is still renting out well and what is not and what I plan to do about all of this.

Chaos In Rentals

First off there are a lot more cards in circulation since the intro of Chaos. In addition a lot of the new Chaos cards are fairly well when it comes to stats and abilities making some older version cards appear obsolete. The drop in DEC prices is also effecting rank battle earnings. This has all led to a spiral drop in rental prices.

The cost of cards are lower with the increase supply of cards in open market. With that a lot of players are likely investing in Chaos cards rather than renting.

The potential of purchasing competitive cards in Chaos at lower prices than older versions it seems far that players will want to invest in the cards rather than having to rent. Bottom line the Chaos series is taking away the demand of rental cards.

Alpha and Promo

As mentioned Chaos cards are better in stats and abilities more often than not so I had to take a hit on my rentals for the premium cards such as those of Alpha and Promo. These series of cards earns players an additional 10% in DEC bonus for every win, however it was not enough to lure in demand for the cards. What took a big hit was my Alpha summoners. Where in past rentals prior to Chaos, my Alpha summoners were renting below 50 CP / DEC. Now I am lucky even if I can get 150 CP / DEC.

For instance level 3 alpha Lynanna Natura is not even renting out at under 5 DEC a day tells me the demand is weak. However Alric Stormbringer is still reasonably renting well.

Even a level 1 is renting for over DEC fairly well. For now I will continue to maintain watching over trying to rent out alpha summoners as much as I can since summoners are necessary in battles. The demand may be weak but some summoners are still in demand. I plan to keep renting out the high demand cards as much as possible while continue to lower the rental prices for cards that are unable to rent until those get rented too.

Rewards

image.png

The largest holding in my collection with over 50% of collection power is my rewards collection. Currently a majority of the cards I have out for rental are renting, close to 90%. However I have had to drop the rental prices and am now averaging a yearly ROA under 11%. Some of the high demand reward cards for rental are legendary.

Gold Foil

There are additional cards that gives DEC bonus for players who use in battles in gold foils. For now majority of my gold foils are rented out with an ROA a little over 12%. However I have had to continuously drop the rental prices similar to what I had done in Alpha and Promo cards.

Gold foil cards I am unable to rent out are cards with weak demand. These are mostly common gold foils that are from the older editions. It all makes sense that the struggle continues when Chaos gold foils are better for play.

Conclusions

Chaos Chaos Chaos... All I can do is adjust my prices to compensate for the lose in demand. In turn though it means I am earning less and on top of that the value of DEC is dropping in value. All in all its not an ideal market for lenders now than it was just a month ago. Things have turned and renters have better offers and more options.

Still I have been playing the game multiple years and have played some other play 2 earn games to say that Splinterlands still offers one of the best rental markets in defi space. All this supply and demand will have to adjust and I am still bullish in the game. In addition I am hopeful that there will be more players on boarding the game making demand and ownership of cards soar. This will likely lead to high demand in rental markets similar to what we had before the Chaos series started circulating.

Until next time thanks for reading!!!

I'm experiencing the same drop in rentals. I'm hoping that the older cards will become more appealing again once lands are out.
