The Secret To Long and Happy Life?

Charlie Munger is a colleague of Warren Buffet. In fact he is second in command as Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. He made a name for himself turning a tragic life into one of the richest people on the planet. He went from divorce broke lawyer who lost a son to Leukemia to marrying again and having a total of 9 children in his life time and becoming a billionaire. Now at the age of 98 he is still working and loving every moment of it. In my opinion anything he says hold merit considering such a life he has lived. Some of what Mr. Munger says focuses on how to live life. For a man that suffered countless tragedies and still be able to best many others when it comes to making money and thriving in his professional career and personal life is simply amazing. I consider him a great role model.

The secret to life - it is easy and simple. You don't have a lot of envy, you don't have a lot of resentment, you don't overspend your income, you stay cheerful in spite of your troubles, you deal with reliable people, and you do what you suppose to do. All thee simple rules work so well to make your life better.

By far one of the best quotes I have heard in regards to living life is this one by Munger. Lets brick down the line items he mentions to a living a long and happy life.

Don't Have A Lot Of Envy

Remember the time where you saw someone had something you also wanted but you could not have. Then envy feels your heart. Munger is saying not to have envy. Instead appreciate what you have already and make good of it.

Don't Have A Lot Of Resentment

I have personal feelings of resentment when I see my peers do more than me when it comes to projects. They seem to be at the top of their game while I am still playing catch up. Yet Munger made a very good point of not trying to focus on what I cannot do or cannot have. Simply put hate blinds the mind from taking the right steps to succeeding in life. I try to focus on my own tasks and what is given to me to the best I can on a daily basis in order to improve myself. Rather than to compare how much someone else has done or how much more they have than me.

Munger is a living example as his net worth based on WSJ is at 2.2 Billion. This is a fraction of what Warren Buffett's net worth, but Munger sits next to Buffett on every yearly Berkshire meeting and has as much say in the meetings as Buffett.

Don't Overspend Your Income

Live within my means. USA is good at borrowing but the reality is any amount of money that is borrowed is robbing from the future. It will all have to be pay back sooner or later. With that mindset I do my best to always live within my means.

Stay Cheerful In Spite Of Your Troubles

Another similar quote is "treat my shortcoming or problem as an opportunity to better myself." There will always be challenges for me but to stay positive about facing them helps motivate me to resolve the challenges. It is easier to solve the problem with a positive mindset.

Deal With Reliable People

One reason challenges arises is due in part with the people I surround myself. If I surround myself with proactive workers I tend to get work done. On the opposite spectrum work with people who tend to not want to do anything will make me have to either take on more workload or unable to accomplish work on time. The latter has a bad feeling to it and is unnecessary if I work with the right people.

You Do What Your Suppose To Do

A deeper meaning to this point Munger is making is figuring out what I need to do in life rather than what I want to do. For instance I am a parent therefore taking care of my children is a responsibility. I need to work to make ends meet and at the same time be available for my children. The time I spend with them and the effort I put in to make their lives better is my priority. Do what I am suppose to do is not difficult to decide. What is difficult is accepting that I have to do it. Who does not want to just enjoy life and not have to sacrifice for someone else if they had a choice? Everyone was once single for a moment in time before having to take of others. How they take care of their responsibilities is what makes life easier.

Conclusions

Mr Munger is 98 and has a net worth over $2 billion. He is living proof of what I think is living life to the fullest. The rules he sets forth to himself should be memorialized and followed by others. I genially believe in what he says. What more can be asked to better one self than to do the things Munger mentions?

I think that is a pretty good quote. While I don't like Munger that much, he does have a proven track record but I kind of wish he wasn't so averse to developing technology.

Nice elaboration of this quote. I cannot judge whether Mr. Munger himself adheres to these "rules" or not, but regardless, they are helpful guiding principles.

I would especially emphasize the point: "Do what you are supposed to do."
As a father myself I know exactly what you are talking about, for me it is a great gift to be able to do these things as a parent.
