Saint Nicholas Day Today
Today, on 6 December, the Christian Church celebrates Saint Nicholas.
Who is Saint Nicholas?
Saint Nicholas was a Greek Christian bishop during the time of the Roman Empire from the city of Myra, a maritime city in Asia Minor.
Patron of: sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, prostitutes, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people, and students.
Some facts: He is said to have saved three girls from being forced into prostitution by dropping a sack of gold coins through their window each night for three nights so their father could pay their dowries. Other legends find him calming a storm at sea, rescuing three innocent soldiers from execution, and chopping down a demon-possessed tree. There is also a story that tells us how during a famine, he resurrected three children who had been murdered and pickled in brine by a butcher who planned to sell them as pork.
Tradition: There is a tradition of secret gift-giving the night before Saint Nicholas (5 December). The gifts are put in the boots of those you want to surprise.
Patriarchs of the Christian faith...
May the faith of these fathers be revived in us.
Blessings!
