My new road!

I've never bought a road before!

img_0.19695895466516447.jpg

20 years ago when I bought my newly built house the private road into my neighborhood was shiny and new. Previously it had been a gravel track, but as new homes were being built, it was decided that the neighbors would join together and pay to have the road paved. It was there when I moved in and I never gave a thought to where it had come from! I've always paid my share each winter to keep the snow plowed from the road, but until it began crumbling, it was not something that occupied a bit of my thoughts

But now after 20 years and numerous patch jobs it became obvious that if we didn't want to be back to the old gravel track, we would need to come up with the funds to have new pavement laid.

A committee was formed and bids were obtained and the contactor that was hired began removing the old asphalt on Monday.

It was supposed to be a quick project. One day to remove the pavement, one to lay the new road, and one day to refrain from driving on it.

But then Wisconsin weather intervened. We had some record cold temperatures this week and today it is raining. It has turned into a longer project than anyone anticipated and it is still not completed! We had no garbage pickup this week and no mail delivery for a few days.

My savings has a big dent in it, but hopefully this will get completed soon and I will once more have a driveable road leading to my house!

And in the meantime I have had plenty of opportunities this week to take photos of road equipment!

Time passed and did mischief on the pavement.

Last weekend I was in a pretty sunny place and I was thinking about you!

Hahaha in some ways we all are so alike, but think about it like this, a little suffering now and when it's completed then years of pleasure to travel on a nice and smooth road.
I bet that within weeks all of the suffering will be forgotten :)

You are right! It is complete, but they are asking us to refrain from driving in it for 72 hours.

The isolation feels similar to when we get massive amounts of snow!

Ah yes and just watch that some people around there don't become impatient and try to drive on the road before it it is properly set. It happens here and the the work needs to be redone which results in a longer wait.

72 hours is a short lockdown and time flies, so you will soon be on the road my friend. Then you will be happy that you waited.

I no longer drive, so it's no problem for me! I stocked up on groceries before the work began, so I can wait to get my next delivery! Since we all had to pay for the road, I expect all the residents will feel a sense of ownership and take care of it properly. Hopefully!

Oh yes, I seem now to remember vaguely that you don't drive and great that you stocked up milady.
That makes a difference as everyone had to pay and that creates ownership. People that own something looks better after it as people that don't pay.

Once the road has been renewed, you will hopefully have at least 20 years before it has to be renewed again.

Now I need to start saving for the next big project... My 20 year old roof!

Is it a wooden roof? Here in Germany, we mostly have tiled roofs. They are not cheap, but they last at least 50-60 years.
Are there tiled roofs in the US?

It is wooden and covered with asphalt shingles, as are most of the roofs in this part of the US. I love the tile roofs in Europe.

Ah the joys of country life. We live off a county maintained paved road but have a long gravel drive way. Gravel is harder to snow plow and we have some low spots that need some work. Hopefully your new road will last you a good long time. You should convince the committee to rename the road Melinda Lane 🙂 then you will feel like you got a little something extra for your contribution haha

Interesting project to follow along from close by @melinda010100
This is something you really don’t think about it much, until it needs really fixing years later. And you need to contribute.

It was not something I had planned ahead for, but at least I had the funds, unlike some of my neighbors.

Yes, I can imagine.
Life just happens sometimes. And these are big chunks out of savings.

Yeah hopefully it gets done quickly. That has to rough. Yeah if you ever seen the movie cars. You've seen right after he finishes the new road, as the locals are cruising along the freshly paved road. Hopefully you get to enjoy that. And hopefully the person you paid to plow takes care of your new road.

I bet everyone in the neighborhood will be watching the plow guy carefully! He has been plowing for us for 10yrs, so at least he knows his way around!

How interesting! Over here that will never happen! We already pay so many taxes that it's the Government job to fix the roads. 😆

Of course they rarely do it and we have a lot of holes in our roads. We might as well stop paying taxes and start paying for those things ourselves... but people here can't even think of a society model working like that. They're all too drunk on socialism, even if it just barely works. 🤦‍♂️

I believe I'm paying slightly less taxes because the government does not provide road services, but they are still high enough that it goes unnoticed!

So what's the distinction between public and private roads there? From the looks of it that's enough of a road that it'd get paved by the county or state highway dept here.

Your not being able to drive on the road for a day after it's paved reminded me of the time I managed to convince my granny to go walking on the freshly paved road in front of her house...we came back with an inch of asphalt stuck to our shoes.

There have been attempts to get the county to take over the road, but they have refused Maybe because it is a narrow dead-end road.

They finished laying pavement today and now are asking us not to drive on it for 72 hours. I can imagine how your shoes looked! When I was a kid I used to go barefoot during the summers and sometimes the bottoms of my feet would look the same way!

Congratulations on the new thing!

I live in a village through which large cars carry stone and sand from a quarry. Asphalt has long disappeared from the road.

By the way, in the Russian Federation, the cost of gasoline includes a tax on the maintenance of highways.
