Vintage fun

While going through some old family photos I came across some photos of children at play. I thought they might be OK for a post into the Toys on Hive Community The community is about 'Toys that bring fun to life' and is hosted by @livinguktaiwan

This photo from the early 1900s is of two of my great aunts, and they are playing on a tire swing in a park that is on the banks of the Rock River 75 miles south of where I live. . That is the same river that flows past my home and It gives me a sense of family continuity to know my ancestors enjoyed it, too. Does anyone know what type of vehicle that old tire was from?

This photo from the late 1930s shows my uncle and his classmates posing for a photo on the playground side in the days before plastic slides, rubber mats and safety rails. On a sunny summer day these old slides were unusable, getting hot enough to cause 2nd degree burns.

From the 1950s an old photo of my uncle and his metal pedal car. I actually remember this toy, still in my grandparents garage although my little legs were not powerful enough to work the old rusty pedals and make the car go. The driveway was steep enough that you could get it rolling pretty good, but there were no brakes to keep it from going out into the street, so I was only allowed on the sidewalk with it.

This photo of my little brother and his shiny new Texaco Fire Chief truck that had a working water gun is from the 1960s. I remember it being too big to play with indoors and besides, mom wouldn't let us fill the water reservoir and shoot water around in the house. Maybe Jimmy had more fun with it than I did.

What a fun post! I remember all those toys, especially the second-degree burns from the slides :-)

I didn't have a fancy pedal car, but my dad built me a "go-kart" with 2x4" boards and lawnmower wheels, steered with a rope.

Those slides were deadly!

I remember boys in the neighborhood having carts something like yours. Fun times!

The old time was really great nor most of us spending there childhood in front of big screens and having many health problems and problems from the child hood days.
I wish those days come back again 😁,

Very cool. I ventured into the family photo scanning project as well. Scanned all my fiance's family photos first, then mne. All told there were close to 6,000 images scanned. And, like you, I found some vintage images of people I didn't recognize as well. They are really old posts, but I thought you might like to see them...

That is a lot of scanning! I've done hundreds, but the suitcases full that are left seem daunting and I can't seem to get started.

Did you have a way to scan multiple images at a time?

I do. So I tend to swap back and forth between my Canon and Epson scanners, depending on which one's behaving better at any given time. Either way, in the scanner software there should be a way to "Preview" what's on the scanner bed. When it gives you the preview, you should have a tool that allows you to draw boxes around each individual image you have Tetrised onto the scanner bed, and I always have every image set to scan at the highest resolution the scanner can give me. When you hit "Scan", it'll scan the contents inside each individual box you drew, outputting each one into their own image file.

Oh! Good to know. I'll see if I can get that figured out. Thank you. That would be valuable.

Nice to see the old photos. Have you used that new reanimation thing they were talking about on the news?

What a big tire swing... You don't see many of those around, these days.

I don't know anything about reanimation?

I don't think I have ever seen a tire swing like that! My grandpa always hung one for us up at the cottage. I remember it filling with rainwater and spiders! 😁

Was the tire from an old Model T? Very nice post - is that the Rock River in Wisconsin? I remember reading about that river as a possible water route that connected up with Aztalan State Park

Model T would certainly be the right era for that old tire swing! Yes. The Rock begins in southern Wisconsin and flows through Illinois before emptying into the Mississippi. I've lived within sight of it most of my life.

We used to have a lot of these "toys" before but unfortunately no pictures to show. But I really enjoyed this post. Nostalgia at its best.

Good days to be out playing, no much traffic in the roads, no brakes skin your toes, toasty warm slide to zip down all make up great memories.

The river runs through the same place you grew up, what amazing memories you must have shared on the water as well.

I hope the children of today grow up having good memories of their growing up years! I worry for them.

Youth are living completely different lives to what we knew, few parents are able to afford living rural life teaching them the value of nature. An iPad nor any other screen can take the place of experiencing life fully. !BEER

Definitely a great one for the Toys on Hive community. Thank you so much for sharing these precious vintage photos from your family album Melinda. I notice your uncle's pedal car has a little trailer, did you use this to transport your toys around? And I love Jimmy's fire truck, both that, and your uncle's pedal car are so classic, love them!

Oh, I'm glad they are OK for the community! All my grandkids are teenagers and I don't have many toys around here anymore. I can probably come up with a few retro toys to do a post about, if that's OK. 😁

Of course Melinda, go for it! Would love to see more diversity in toys here, even anything you buy for yourself would be great

I buy jigsaw puzzles, are they toys, though?

My intention was anything that you can play with to give you fun, pleasure and enjoyment, which in its literal meaning includes sex toys, thats the only thing I've excluded, just to keep things simple 😊😉

Other than that, I used "Toys" to represent everything that serves the above purpose, so it's a pretty broad. No worries!!

What fun, @melinda010100!!! Your little brother's Texaco firetruck is similar to the Tonka which my brother loved to play with when he was young!!

I used to post daily, but don't seem to have nearly as much time these days! But I do love spending time the way that I am now.

Oh my gosh these are such great photos Melinda! You have such a treasure chest of archived photos, just amazing. That photo of the pedal car looks like it has a wagon hitched to it, that's quite an outfit!

Howdy today Melinda! Do you have like big boxes of those old photos or are they all in photo albums? I think that would be wonderful to be able to spend time looking through those!

I have the old suitcase that my grandparents kept all their photos in. Some of them were put in albums with those little sticky corner tabs, but the majority of them are just loose. Photo management is a bit of a nightmare!
