This week’s battle challenge focuses on the Equalizer Ruleset.

In the Equalizer ruleset, all monsters in battle take on the highest base health of any monster on either side of the battle. This means the playing field is leveled, and low-mana cap monsters can compete with high-mana cap ones. My default strategy for the Equalizer ruleset is to rely on the opposition to provide the high-health monster, and I focus on utilizing monsters with high armor and low health. Exploding Dwarf and Enchanted Defender are super helpful as they have high armor and low health, but we mustn’t forget zero (Furious Chicken) and one mana cap cards (Creeping Ooze) can become beefy front-line tanks.

  • Thaddius Brood (Summoner): -1 health and magic damage to all enemy monsters.
  • Cursed Windeku: DPS tank with Thorns ability.
  • Battering Ram + Undead Badger + Corpse Fiend: low-mana cap support melee damage.

In this battle, I decided to go against my default strategy, whereby I relied on the opposition to provide the high health base cost and selected the Cursed Windeku to lead the front line. Cursed Windeku is so good as it has high health, good speed, good melee damage, and Thorns ability. The rest of the backline was filled with low-mana cap monsters who all played a crucial role thanks to Equalizer Ruleset. Even though my opposition had a total of eight melee damage vs. my six melee damage, my total health was 40 versus their 30 total health (due to only selecting three monsters), and this proved to be the critical factor (not taking into account some good fortune with a few misses by the opposition) which resulted in a good victory.

The Equalizer ruleset levels the playing field, allowing low-mana cap monsters to compete with higher mana cap monsters. Some may find this enjoyable, and others don’t, and therefore it depends on what challenge you are after. I like the ruleset as it opens the possibilities of playing monsters that I wouldn’t have considered, especially those that are too squishy and have no survivability. Once you have experienced an Exploding Dwarf with 10+ health leading the front line and hitting hard, you will realize why this ruleset is so fun.
