How partner mentality wins.

For a long time, I tried hard to sell things to people. Sometimes with a little success but not always. I had the wrong approach in that I thought selling was trying to make someone do something that they did not want to do.
I thought it was about convincing someone. The problem with my approach was that it required an argument with me winning in the in end. That doesn't happen very often.
I became much more successful when I stopped being a salesperson and started being a partner.
As a partner, I identify people who have a specific need that correlates to what I can deliver. Or I identify people who want the benefit of what I can do or what the product can accomplish.
Much of what I do involves other people gaining wealth. I say from the beginning that "I win, when you win." By linking my success to their success, it forces me to put their interest and goals before my own.
Also, this approach requires that I turn a person away from an investment when it is not most beneficial for the partner. Some investments can benefit a partner slightly and me greatly, and those are not good investments in a partnership approach.
There's another benefit from a partnership mentality that is really for me. I can separate customers from partners. Customers are transactional. Customers often seek the lowest cost provider and customers lack loyalty. Partners value my time and advice. Partners value the relationship. Partners are loyal.
Why is this important to me? I want to work with partners. The return of my time investment is much more profitable with a partner than a customer. When I gain a partner, the acquisition cost is a one-time expense of time/effort/money, but the return lasts for years.
