Greetings everyone! Today is a great honor for me to introduce you an Apsara dance, a form of Cambodian classical dance. “Apsara” is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

Apsaras are also known as Vidhya Dhari or Tep Apsar in Khmer, beautiful, supernatural female beings.

It is a dance that royal family created as a special treasure to show the high dignity of Cambodian dancers.

This performance also includes with classical music. It is really interesting that each position of dancers has its own particular symbolism. Apsara dance is a form of Cambodian classical dance, popularly known as Cambodian Royal Ballet. It makes an integral part of Khmer culture and Khmer civilisation, as depicted on the walls of Angkor’s temples.

Dancers put on different kind of crowns. The main Apsara crown will have five points or tips, with two rows of spherical decorations while, the other apsara will only have three points of tips and the rest will be the same.

As Cambodia traditional decoration, they put real flowers in the crown close to their ear. The looks are like apsara pictured at the wall in Angkor Wat carving.

People who visit Angkor Wat will notice the thousands of Apsara dancers adorning the stone walls of Angkorian temples, this is one of the most attractive things.

I used to visit Angkor Wat for a several time and the things that always caught my attention is Apsara.

famous for its luxury of costumes, accessories, gold and silver, accompanied by a beautiful soft dance.

The dancers moved gracefully, slowly one by one with a smile.

Dancers are traditionally adorned with fragrant flowers, although sometimes fresh flowers are substituted with faux flowers. According to Wikipedia

The female dancers are well-dressed with Khmer Classical Royal Ballet costumes to symbolize the Devata (Angel). The costumes of the apsara role is based on the devatas as depicted on bas-relief of Angkor Wat. They wear a Sampot sarabap, a type of silk brocade that is intricately pleated in the front.

The instruments have a soundbox at the bottom of the stick, covered with leather or snake skin. Strings run from pegs at the top of the stick and secured at the bottom, running across the soundbox. It has a beautiful sound, I would fell asleep if someone play it in my house.

Cambodian people consider dancing is an integral part of spiritual life and rites of passage, as well as a popular form of entertainment. Moreover, they also believe that all dance styles – both traditional and modern styles, can help create friendship and happiness among society.
