Kiribati -- The Oldest Place on Earth

Today I was dealing with some work involving an important and hard deadline. While the deadline specified date and time but no time zone, I ended up investigating the different time zones we have on our planet.

Especially in relation to the deadline I was wondering what would be the time zone with the "newest" time. Or rather, what time zone has the latest hour on the clock.

While the coordinated universal time (UTC) is located in Greenwich the earliest time on the planet should be in a time zone with a higher number. The highest timezone used is +14 and is located in the Pacific Ocean. The island republic of Kiribati, a constellation of atolls spread across 1.4 million square miles is in this time zone.

A fun fact though, is that Kiribati is the only nation in this time zone, and this time zone is reaching far into the timezones on the other end of the spectrum. In fact, it is surrounded by the -10 zone which encompasses French Polynesia. The flag of Kiribati even depicts a sun rising perpetually above the wave.

Currently, the time difference between Kiribati (+14) and French Polynesia (-10) is 2 hours. However, this includes a date difference. While it is a Thursday in Kiribati, it is still Wednesday in French Polynesia.

Although the timezone of Kiribati is unique, strange and out-of-the-ordinary time zone situations exist across the globe. Having a closer look at a timezone chart can be a really fun activity.

For those still in the running for a monthly author badge, remember it is based upon UTC time :-)

That's interesting. I remember crossing the dateline on the way to Japan when I was in the Navy. On the way over we went from Friday noon to Saturday noon and on the way back we had two Saturdays. That was crazy. So, the +14 means that Kiribati is 14 hours later than UTC and French Polynesia at -10 is ten hours earlier and they are still only 2 hours apart. Is that correct?

Double Saturday, that funny. At least it wasn't a Monday ;-) The 2 hours indeed is correct. At least according to google. I guess one of the two countries doesn't consider daylight savings?

At least it wasn't Monday, indeed. Of course now that I work for myself Monday isn't an issue. Daylight Savings time is silly. They should have stopped that everywhere a long time ago. Either everyplace has it or no has it. Especially in a global economy. All it does is add confusion. Anyway, enjoy your day! 😀

Yeah I agree, it’s silly! I once saw an article about it where they computed the actual cost of daylight savings. It was an interesting calculation showing it quite the waste of energy for every one 😅

Have a nice day in whatever time zone you are!

That's interesting. I never heard it measured in terms of energy expenditure. But it makes sense. Have a nice Friday and weekend. 😀
