Sad song for a lonely soldier / Música triste para um soldado solitário

Today I'm going to tell you a sinister story that happened to me when I was a soldier in the Brazilian army.

The year was 2008 and I was on guard duty. Being sentry works as follows: A number of soldiers are assigned for this purpose, 3 shifts, with each shift being responsible for guarding the barracks. In the surroundings there are some guardhouses where there is a soldier in each one. Four in total, and far apart.

My time arrived, I went to the guardhouse called "canal" and it was exactly 2 o'clock in the morning.

The "channel was a guardhouse that was in a secluded and solitary place. On the left side a hill, on the right a thicket and in front of me a kind of swamp.

There in front of me, very close to the guardhouse where I was sentry, there was a stream that many years ago the death of a soldier.

It was raining while he was trapped and the water rose as he struggled to breathe and no one could get him out in time. A story that was told for many years in this barracks, I don't know if it's a legend or if the fact was true but I know that near this stream there was a small bridge with a name on a plate in honor of someone, maybe for this soldier.

These stories are great for messing with a soldier's mind alone in the dark at 2 am, but it never bothered me to be there when I needed to be.

"Canal" was a place avoided by soldiers to be sentry, really there was something strange there. That day I thought I was crazy, I heard a sad song being played on a piano. This sound started shortly after I had surrendered the previous soldier when I was already alone.

I was never a superstitious person, in fact I was always skeptical of the supernatural and as I tried to understand what was going on the sad music kept playing. I confess that despite being an atheist at that time I prayed, there was no house in the vicinity and even if there was who would be crazy enough to play a song like that at a considerable time at almost 3 o'clock in the morning?

Finally the sound subsided after a long time of agony and fear, my surrender was coming and the relief of not needing to be there was great.

Meeting the rest of the soldiers who were on guard duty at the same time as me, I asked if anyone had heard the sound of a piano and its sad music. They laughed and said I was sleepy and listening to bullshit. I ended up agreeing that sleep could have been the cause of a sound mirage.

Upon arriving at the base, one of the soldiers called me aside and said that he had also heard the sad music of the piano.

It was scary to live it! In fact, my story with this event ends in this post, however, a year after I left the military, a soldier committed suicide in that same cabin in the story. Maybe he was going through psychological problems, but the coincidence is great...

Your experience in the military must have been a very torrid one, are you retired now?

I served in the military for only one year, during which time I was promoted to corporal. But despite the short time it was a good experience despite some uncomfortable occasions haha and yielded some good stories to tell.
