Four months in Mexico: First Impressions

avatar

Two weeks after we arrived in Mexico, I wrote a post about our first two weeks here.
I love to update things as I go, and lots has happened since we first set foot in this country.
We're actually almost here five months now, since we arrived on the 18th of November, but we won't get too precise. So here it goes, my 4-5 month update and impressions.

What I love about Mexico

Almost anything is possible

And I mean that in the most literal sense. Your car door doesn't close anymore and no money for a new one or to get it fixed? Why not just put a garden gate on it? Yes, that's exactly what happens here. Maybe not the safest solution but it works, and it's fine. Not a cop in sight that will even make an effort to stop someone like that.

Hole in the roof of the car? Wooden plank will fix that.
Scooters often find themselves with the whole family on them. That's cool too. Not like in SE Asia though haha, no one tops that.

You can figure out for yourself what else is possible here. It's really a lot hehe.

Live and let live

No one here cares about what you wear, or how you carry yourself.
If you decide to be a diva, in high heels, short dress, arrogant look on your face: you've come to the wrong place!
It may get you some looks, wanted or unwanted, but no one really cares what you do or look like. You're not going to get better or worse treatment for it. Maybe worse.

If you feel you carry around a bit more weight than you'd like to admit, whether it's 2, 10, or 50 pounds, but you feel comfortable wearing a bikini everywhere you go: Go for it! Because no one cares. There won't be any strange looks. Not from anyone local anyway.

Live and let live should be the motto here because that's what it truly is.

Since I am a natural birth and breastfeeding advocate (two subjects very close to my heart), one thing I love here is that you will see women everywhere breastfeeding their babes in public.
AS IT SHOULD BE!
No one bats an eye lid. As opposed to what I've encountered sometimes living in the Netherlands and Ireland. Better even, many women have their babies in a carrier or in a wrap and continue with their activities while their baby is fed and happy. That's my kinda mommies!

Mexican people are kindhearted, helpful and friendly

Yes, sometimes it takes a little while to break the ice but most people here are very outgoing, and always there to help.
Especially if you make an effort to at least try and speak Spanish.
So even though I don't always come across clearly with my hand - and foot gesture Spanish, whoever I speak to will always try to understand.
Our neighbours have all been lovely. They're there when I need them. My lovely upstairs neighbour Patricia and her daughter Vanessa always have time for a chat. And there are more people who we've befriended here.
We're making friends here in the community, the kids, and me as well.

The outdoor life

When we first came here, there were a few kids outside and my youngest ran to them right away. They've always included him even though he's much younger.
I love that the kids here can entertain themselves with something other than TV or phones.
After they come out of school, the kids are outside. In the pool or just hanging at the palapa. Amazing!

Of course, we all enjoy the outdoor life. Now all I need is a laptop small enough to bring along so I can work outside too. The perfect office is at the beach or pool!

The beaches (unless it's sarragossa season) are amazing, the cenotes are something from a movie, and even in the city, you will still find little pieces of paradise.
AMAZING!

But even when I'm in the pool in the morning, I can see eagles flying around (checking out that really big fish in the pool hehe), birds will be singing and taking baths. Awesome stuff.

The country is HUGE!

If you don't like the beachlife (who doesn't??? That's crazy!) then there are mountains, and lakes, and even the temperature doesn't have to be so high there.

You'd rather smother in the 40 degree celcius heat in spring in Tabasco? Possible.
Surfing? Yup, that too!
Scuba diving to wake up some sleeping sharks in a cave?
We got ya!

Awe... so cute! source

I think there's something here for everyone. And if you'd ever get bored here, well there's Belize, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador and so much more right around the corner!
But I don't think that would happen easily.

Aside from this, Mexico has quite some history, and don't forget the culture! So for those who like history and cultural outings, there's that too! Mayan temples, musea, it's all here. Never a boring day!

Every city, every little village is different. Food is different everywhere too (even though we've only been to two states).
For instance, there's a softdrink in Acapulco, that can only be bought in the state of Guererro. Nowhere else.

Conclusion

There's so much more but I don't want to put you to sleep hehe. And I'll keep more for later.
Mexico is an amazing country with so much diversity. Outside of that, I've been making friends, which is such a welcome change to Ireland where we were all quite lonely to be fair. Sometimes I even have too much going on haha!
The people, the food, the beaches, the jungle...
it's all amazing!
Of course, not everything is always perfect but that's OK, and it's never perfect anywhere.
Right now, in these past few months, it has been perfect for us, and that's all that matters!

I do! As you can see in my other posts! But of course you notice this one haha.
With this one I just needed to get it out quickly, since I had a lot to do.
Sorry, won't happen again 😟.

I admit, everything sounds quite amazing. Not to mention the looks, so much more awesome from the flat netherlands.

I love live and let live!! And it sounds like you are settling in nicely, which is beyond awesome, I am so glad you are enjoying your new home😊

And you brought up something near and dear to my heart, making an effort to speak the language of the country you're in. I'll never forget being cheered and hugged by an entire elevator of abuelas when I stumbled my way in Spanish through letting them know what floor I needed to get out at and tried to converse congenially as we rode up the tower. They were so sweet lol!
