Magic Eden: Maybe not so Magic?

avatar

A friend told me I should buy a certain NFT. This NFT is a Solana based one, and can be found on Magic Eden. THE marketplace/website for Solana NFTs. Awesome. You'd think at least.
But if you read on, you'll find that it's not that awesome after all.

Is it ME for Magic Eden or for Major Error?

So I started trying to figure out how to bid on an NFT. Turns out, you have to transfer SOL to a bidding wallet. OK, done that.
So then I made a bid on the NFT I liked.
Worked perfectly.

However, after a day or so, I decided the bid was too low, and in order to actually be taken seriously on my bid, I'd have to shoot a bit higher.
So I cancelled the bid.
Worked perfectly too.
But now it begins...

Meanwhile, the NFT in question wasn't available anymore, and actually there were a few offered a bit cheaper than the one I went for the first time so I decided to pick one that I liked best, and made a bid close to what the asking price was. I was sure they'd let it go for $30 less than asking price. And that's where things went wrong...

I'd place a bid, and then started getting error messages right away.
First this:

Well, that doesn't sound promising, does it?
It doesn't.
But I still kept my fingers crossed,
and my hopes up that it'd somehow turn out ok.
It didn't.
Because then I got this:

Yeah, something definitely went wrong!

I did as I was told, and refreshed the page. Then tried again.
Nothing.
And again.
Again nothing.
Yup...again.
Nothing again.

I must have tried this about 20 times before I gave up and decided to get in touch with the MagicEden support. Lucky for me, they have a chat option and are pretty much available to answer questions 24/7. At least, that's what you think when you see their chat option...

It was all good in the beginning. I sent my ticket, explained what had been happening, what I had done, and how I tried to solve this issue without help.

The guy on the other end was fairly quick with his response, and offered a few solutions, all of which I had already tried. Just to make the guy happy, I tried it again.

I turned my VPN off and tried, nothing. Turned it back on: nothing. Tried a new incognito page. Nothing. Cleared my cookies and history: NADA.
I tried and I tried, and the result was nothing, nothing, nothing.

Then, I suggested that I'd try to change my browser. He hadn't even thought of that. So I did. Nothing. Different browser again: Nothing!
In all I tried 4 different browsers and nothing changed. I still received the same error messages.

And that's also the time when things on the other end changed. The guy I was talking to had vanished (I'd been talking to him on and off for about 3 days, so yeah, he probably had a day off), and whoever took over from him just didn't respond.

Until about 48 hours later...
So by this time, I had been trying to solve the issue for about 5 days, to no avail.
If it would have been an auction, there would have been no chance for me to get in.

And then the kicker: After all this time with his colleague, trying everything we could, this new agent asked the following question:

"Are you sure you have enough funds in your account?"

untitled.gif
Gif by tenor

Really?

Uhhhmmm...NO!
I ALWAYS try to spend more money than I have!
Why??
Is that not going to work?
Did I just spend 3 days trying, only to find out I am THAT stupid?
WOW!
Thanks man, you've just solved all of my issues!
I should just buy exactly what I can afford, and then I'll be fine (rolls eyes).
Yeah Mr. Know it all, of course I know that I can't bid more than what I have. Duh!

But when you thought that would have been it, then you'd be wrong.
Nope.
The guy couldn't just take my word for it.
He had to check.
Only so he could tell me: "I can see you bid 'x-amount' on it, and your wallet has 'x-amount', so you have sufficient funds..."

untitled.gif

What a joke. I just fucking told you that I have enough funds. In fact, I told him exactly how much I had!
OK, so then you'd think your issue would be solved, right?
Now that he knew for 100% sure I wasn't lying to him?
You'd be wrong again though if you'd think that.
He tells me to hold on, and two hours later (!) he finally responds with:
'Everything is working on our end. So can you...followed by a list of all the things I'd already done 100 times by now."
By this time, I felt quite like Mr. Pitt below...
untitled.gif
Gif by Tenor

I tried to explain to him as calmly as possible to FUCK off...
No, of course I didn't do that.
Trust me, I wanted to.
I'm too nice.
My mommy taught me better than that.
I told him that I had tried all of the things on his list,
many times, that I tried it again after he told me, and nothing worked.
He then went on to apologize and repeated that all was fine on their end.
So nothing they could do about it. Well, if I tried everything on my end, and that
hasn't helped, then it's obviously not fine on your end. But that could just be my opinion.
I wanted to ask him if another wallet might help but I left it at that.
I'm not sure it would make a difference.

Help!

Suggestions are welcomed!
If anyone has ANY idea on how to solve this problem, then please let me know.

Conclusion

I'm just very, VERY happy that in Hive and everything else built on Hive etc. just everything works smoothly, most of the time. Yes, of course, we have our issues at times, as everywhere else. But that's normal and it's usually not a huge issue in Hive, and if there is a problem, it's mostly solved in no time.

I didn't want to make this into a post full of complaints so I'm sorry if I bored you to death, but things like these just make me appreciate the Hive blockchain and everything built on it so much more. I think eventually, more people will realize just how much of a game changer we have here. And we will all be glad that we were here, from the beginning.

Huh... That was an unpleasant experience, but on the other side, It's a nicely written post... Unfortunately, I can't help you with the issue as I don't have experience with SOL blockchain at all...
Maybe some of the readers will have a solution!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

Great little story, made me think about my issue with metamask.... where I tried to remove a transfer that had too little funds and I confirmed something like 5 times and ended up paying fees 5 times for nothing... BTW I raised a ticket for that and Never got a response...or not yet and this was Oct 2021

Yeah, metamask doesn't have the best rep for their issue solving. I'm not even sure that support exists with them. And depending on which chain, they'll probably blame it on them. I hope you didn't spend too much on that!

If this is one of the things that bothers me the most about this type of network. Why do I have to pay if nothing has been done? And why is the cost not defined in advance?
Sorry for sharing my frustrations.

Well, in some cases it is defined in advance. But not always and if it is, it's sometimes not accurate either. No worries about sharing your frustrations. That's what I just did in a whole post 😆

oh these people that respond like that, my gosh that's actually something that gives me the urge to crawl through the computer and commit a crime haha.

I've dealt with SO many of these morons that are THAT stupid not to even understand these answers are only adding to the frustration as well as being plain out STUPID because if that was the case his colleague must have been a moron lol.

I have low tolerance for this kind of support by now, I just can't take it and I'm happy that I'm not you in this case. Hopefully, it will be solved :)

It was solved. In the weirdest way haha. Good for another post.
But yeah, I share the urge hahaha. It's a good thing those people aren't in the room with us lol.

That's the first thing I was thinking when I read this. Solana has gas fees so you probably don't have enough money to cover the gas. That is why WAX and HIVE are so superior when it comes to NFTs. No gas fees, sure, you need resources, but if you are just buying one NFT they usually cover those costs for you. That or you already have stuff staked anyway to cover the tx fees. I have one NFT I bought on BSC, but everything else is either WAX or HIVE.

gas on Solana is less then a penny. I would bank it was a node issue or something of the like. Just try again later. Solana just had it's hackothon. It's a fresh chain gonna have a lot of node issues and even hacks (which they had)

I tried for two weeks, every day several times. To no avail. I was aware of their issues but when I started this, the first time there was no issue. Then all of a sudden there was, only minutes later. So I knew it wasn't me.
Right after I wrote this post, the issue was solved and the transaction went through. But in a very weird way and it shouldn't have LOL. So yeah, there were some funny things going on.

"Solana has gas fees so you probably don't have enough money to cover the gas"... Uhm no, I definitely calculated in the gas fees, and they're minimal.
6 years dealing with crypto did teach me a thing or two. The fees are very minimal and show up before the transaction is confirmed.

But the issue has been solved. Not the way anyone would think. It was a weird experience to say the least...

My only suggestion when you are not getting the information you need from a support technician is to ask to speak to their supervisor. For me, it all goes back to the saying, "Don't take a 'NO' from someone who cannot give you a 'YES'."

I'm still trying to wrap my head around NFTs, so I can't help you there. Nor do I have experience with Solana.

The biggest problem I have with transactions is gas fees. Even if I want to buy an ERC20, I still have to pay ETH gas fees. Even if I want to buy CUB or any other BEP20, I still have to pay BNB gas fees. Etc.

It's not even enough to have sufficient ETH or BNB or whatever main cryptocurrency is needed to pay gas fees for a Layer 2 token. There needs to be ETH/BNB/whatever in every wallet which has the tokens (or NFTs) you really care about. I learned this lesson the hard way recently.

You may have already known that, but it's one of those details that's easy to forget about as we get excited about an anticipated purchase.

Ethereum itself may be better for NFTs, but then there are those gas fees which can kill the experience if not handled right.

Your next NFT experience will be far superior to this one, and as others have suggested here, WAX and Hive are better places for NFTs.

In case this comment doesn't have the answers you seek of point you in the right direction, please accept this slice of !PIZZA and bit of !LUV to take the edge off the aggravation Solana support gave you earlier.

Awe thanks for the Luv, and I love pizza! Yeah, I know Hive is better to deal with. Ether fees are crazy and I won't even go near anything there now since I've once lost 120 USD in gas fees because a transaction didn't go through on their side... I'm staying away from ether based tokens now and NFTs.

(Edited)

There was major issues with minting on SOlana the blockchain went offline for 7 hours or so all tx where stuck and nothing worked. I was trying to mint free NFTs I got for another NFT I was holding. I had 10000000000 tabs open to try to do multiple transactions until it finally worked out. It cost me a lot of nerves. So yes I am super happy about sending stuff on hive and bang its there 3 seconds later...What a blast.
I really do not like to transact on SOL
Maybe things have calmed down already and you can actually do transactions now.

Ah one thing have you tried another browser or do you have enough funds in your Solana wallet
!LOL
just joking

Yes, I am aware of the issues they had but I started this ordeal 2 weeks before their issues. And everything worked fine on their side they said haha.
Anyway, it was solved right after I wrote this post. But it shouldn't have been lol. Another post coming up!

If you don't get the answers you need from a rep, you need to move up the chain. Keep going up until you get the information you need. I realize this is much easier said than done.

Sounds like a crypto experience. You should be used to this by now? Do they have a Discord? Solana is fast and works great when it works. Did you lose any crypto from the transfer fee's? Did you confirm on the chain if it was verified? It's just like BSC or Polygon failed transactions. Perhaps you were unlucky in the timing. The guy's on the other end might have just said there was a node issue.

Try again later?

Oh yes, I'm used to crypto issues haha. But when everything goes smoothly for a while, one gets spoiled and forgets 😆. No crypto was lost due to fees. So that's fine. It just wouldn't do anything but give me error messages.
Well, it's solved now but I'd already given up and it shouldn't have been solved to be honest as I'd moved my funds to the main wallet already haha.
But I'm not complaining about that, after two weeks lol. Time for a new post.

Maybe... Maybe... JUST MAYBE... it's a sight you shouldn't spend your $30 on an NFT on Solana and just get one from the Hive NFT showroom.

Orrrrr.... You need a new computer.

Yeah, I sincerely think that you just got caught by the blackouts Solana network is suffering of since last week (let's hope that it's just that!) - I had this 2 SOL in my Binance account that I wanted to withdraw for an upcoming 1.5 SOL mint I was WL for, and just realized Binance has suspended every Solana interaction, such as, you guessed right, withdrawals. So I missed it big time (went straight ahead to a juicy 34 SOL FP) and ended up hating Solana at all. However, there are not (yet) better platform for NFTs and/or p2e opportunities than Sol, so if you still got some patience left, try these steps a few more times. Maybe trying a different market than ME, ever tried Solsea?

Here I'll send you the list of Solana ecosystem so you may look for something else, and see if it is ME or maybe the entire thing.

Get some !PIZZA

Bless,

I hope you ended up solving the issue but I don't think you should have tried most of them by now. Have you tried making sure that you have the network added correctly? Then again I don't think it's an ERC-20 and I have no knowledge about using Solana.
