How do we see our friendships?

avatar

We need all types of relationships - from acquaintances to best friends. Some will stay forever - others will go. Embrace them all as they bring uniqueness and/or lessons as they add to our life experiences and stories. ©MoMoGrOw

Today I was reminded of those words which I wrote 3 years ago. I found them after my iPhone showed me a video compilation of photos from 3 years ago today. The compilation was a visit to a good friend's beautiful home. Unlike today, we had decent weather so we sat outside in her gorgeous garden.

These photos remind me of our friendship.
My friend moved away to sunnier climes but our friendship remains intact. This I believe is a lifetime friendship. Other friends have literally just passed through my life. For no rhyme or reason some friendships bloom ….

then just wither and die.

They just do - no bitterness or remorse.

Other friends were in my life for a specific reason. For instance - because of a particular interest or hobby. If the friendship ended thereafter - that is just the way it was meant to be. Some friends will always be there and some will just drift away. We could develop and grow in different ways or just simply drift apart. It might hurt if we lose someone we really cared for or if we had to end a friendship.

However, we might realize and simply accept that some friends are really there “for a reason, a season or a lifetime”. This saying is true and once we accept it - then we can handle things a bit better and know that the way our friendships develop is just a part of life.

I could spend time elaborating on this saying, however the best explanation is via the poem where the saying "reason, a season or a lifetime" originates.
Indeed - it is not just a saying but also a poem. The author is unknown but this saying is famous nonetheless.

Reason, Season, Lifetime Poem

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you figure out which one it is,
you will know what to do for each person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON,
it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty;
to provide you with guidance and support;
to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually.
They may seem like a godsend, and they are.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time,
this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON,
because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it. It is real. But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons;
things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person,
and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

From your poem I can relate that you have a deep sense of life. Many people dig to find the truth about people and relationships but it is always too late for them to figure it out, but in your case, you have clearly summarized it. I am not a poem person but your poem was clearly mind blowing.

Hi @lemonade1 thanks for our comment. I write poems but I cannot take credit for this one although the author is unknown. I did mention that in my post. I hope it was not misleading.
Knowing what type of friends we have helps to manage expectations thus helping us to manage our emotions.

I have had a mostly small circle of friends for all of my life. I have had people who I thought were my "friends" but instead took advantage of me and bullied me. So I find it difficult to make friends and trust people. I have learned lessons about friendship from everyone who has been in my life.

That is sad and like you said lessons are learnt from those individuals. I am sorry that you were bullied though. I can empathize as the same happened to me. I managed to get over it. Thank goodness. I know many people but like you - I have a small trusted circle of good friends. I am happy that you do too. We must keep our hearts opened to love whilst protecting it.
I shared my bullying story here on Hive a long time ago. I will share it again but it might bore listnerders though. 😀

Thanks very much for your kind words, @momogrow! It is a challenge sometimes but I work on being open and without judgement as much as possible. I am happy you managed to get past being bullied. It is a victory of its own kind. Have a great day and start to your week! 😀❤️
