Art Journal : Week 2 - First Portrait Sketches

(Edited)

Hello Everyone,

I am back with another art journal update. This is an update on the progress I have made in my second week of sketching and making my art journal.

This week I started off very active drawing every day, but then dropped off the last couple of days. However, I plan some time for sketching this weekend so I will continue my sketching journey.

I continued working from my book with some basic sketching of household items.

I think I need to work on my straight lines somewhat. I will try to find a ruler to help me with that.

I was very excited once I got my new book which is called Draw Easy! It gave a few pages to actually read first with good tips on what strength pencils to use for different things like shadows, also to consider where the sun is coming from and vanishing points.

The first tasks were to do some portraits. Here is my first one. I was struggling with the ears and face shape a little.

Side by side you can see my attempt.

I need to get a good eraser to help with corrections and any changes I decide.

I am also enjoying adding some color to my sketches, it gives another dimension to drawing that I am enjoying.

My final portrait sketch was this one. I quite like the guide in that it helps you think about dimensions and where you will place everything.

I'm not sure if I was making him a Klingon with his ear or an Elf.

Overall, I think portraits can be quite challenging, but they are also something new and fun to draw.

Thanks for reading/looking.

Interesting to compare your sketches of the portraits to the book versions.

Also, I enjoyed looking at the household items and checking out the German vocabulary. Much of it was familiar to me as I lived in Germany for a while and have studied German on and off over the years, but I can't remember ever learning that a "bucket" was an "Eimer." Thanks!

Hi David,

I am glad you found it interesting. I am thinking you could also learn art and german at the same time with this method.

How long ago were you in Germany?

Oh yes, learning through art would be fun. I used to do a bit of drawing with "water colour pencils" - a long time ago... almost as long ago as when I lived in Germany!

I taught English for Inlingua Sprachschule in Berlin, 1991-92.

Ah cool, that's a while ago. I have lived in Berlin, it is a great place to spend some time.

Yes, I really want to go back one day and see all the developments. I mean, when I was there there was no glass dome on the Reichstag.

I see both, a lot of progress since your first shared kitchen sketches and now the first portraits as well as still a long journey ahead of you. Tbh - when you mentioned somewhere that you wanted to have a go at portraits I was like 'whaaaat? Steve only started sketching and he's now already on to the most difficult ones' - so, well done! And keep practising and sharing.

Thanks Oceanbee. I didn't think I could do a portrait so early but it was the first thing in the new book.

I like the art journal as it keeps me focused to keep going.

Oh yeah, I did this as well when I started my art journey. I also used gridlines. But now, everything is on my eyes and in the mind.
Ever tried griflines before? It is good for getting an accurate outline sketch of a portrait.

I didn't try gridlines before yet but will look it up and give it a go. I will check my book too to see if they have it in about them too. Thanks for the tip!
