Autumn Garden Update

With autumn in full swing now, it is time to prepare the garden for the wintertime. This involves quite a few activities even for my small and simple garden. Mostly I have a simple grass area so that the kids can play on it. Usually, they are running around, trampolining, or playing football.

One of my first tasks is to dethatch the grass. This is a process of removing the dead grass buildup using a special mowing machine. This will help the grass breathe and grow better in the future. Before I do that, I first mow my lawn, and then I am ready to start.

I need to go in both directions to give the grass a good chance to breathe. Once done, as you can see, this produces a lot of waste material that I need to dispose of. A trick I use to gather it up is to use my mower to suck it up in the basket. However, this does not gather everything. Therefore, I get the rake out and gather the remaining dead grass.

Once finished, you can see the result, it looks like it will grow better. I then seed the grass. Afterward, I then add some extra fertiliser soil to some spots that were not growing so well this year. I hope it will improve for the next spring/summer season. With the seeds mixed in already, I also spread some extra winter fertiliser. It just needs a good downpour of rain and the garden will be ready.

Some other steps I take to prepare my garden for winter are to disconnect the water hose and sprinkler system. We don't want that freezing up in the wintertime.
