Benefits of Vegan Lifestyle - Saving Money

Hello V-Gang!,

Many people are reporting a huge explosion in food prices and I wanted to show that this could be a good opportunity to try the vegan lifestyle. One of the huge benefits of eating vegan is generally much lower prices.

Many vegetables are not shooting up in price like many other products and you can make a cheap and tasty meal from them very easily. The main vegetables I like to eat at the moment are cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower as they are quite wholesome and make some tasty recipes.

Depending on where you are on your health/vegan journey, having a meat-free meal with one of these vegetables would give your health a great boost AND save you money in these hard times. Not to mention how tasty it is and how great you will feel after!

Today I went shopping and was checking the price of the main vegetables, in particular, I was searching for cabbage because I asked my wife if she could make the vegan version of "Bigos", which is made mainly with cabbage.

Here you can see, that a cabbage costs just €1,49 and can provide 2 or 3 meals for a family!! We made lunch for a family of 4 and there was still half left for another meal. Plus the portion was big and we had enough left over to eat for supper or the next day if we wanted.

Of course, you need a few other ingredients like an onion and some carrots. But these are also inexpensive still.

The great thing about buying these vegetables and making some meals with them is that they are also not manufactured pushing the prices up and they are not made from grains, so are much healthier.

This is just one dish that you could make and it doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg. It is also quite quick to make. We ate it with mashed potato.

Do you have any other cheap vegan meal ideas?

I was a very strict vegan for a few years but now I eat mostly vegan, around 98/99%.

Cannot share your opinion, at least here in Austria vegetables and plant based oil for example were raising in prize like crazy this year. And even for saisonal avaiable fruits.

The recipe looks great never tried carbage this way, but will do next time !ALIVE

That's a shame that the prices in Austria have gone up so much there. Here the oil prices went up 400%, but the remaining vegetables are very reasonably priced still. !ALIVE !CTP

Many plant items we buy are rather inexpensive, but protein-packed is a different story. The most grateful item nutrition-vise versus price I found on the market is hemp flour as it requires minimal quantities.

Oh I didn't know that. I've never used hemp flour before, but I avoid wheat as much as possible. Mostly if I eat bread, it is wheat or preferrably corn bread.

Good point. We are not vegan, but we do try to eat a few vegan meals each week - mainly for the health benefits. But the cost is also a good point !

Unfortunately the food prices hike also affects the cost of vegetables here but we still have to eat them, haha. I am not vegan nor vegan inclined but eating my vegetables is a must.

What a coincidence I've been planning to go vegan at least twice a week to reduce my meat intake and I see this post.

It's true vegetables are much cheaper meals than poultry and meats I've been thinking about simple recipes like flat bread 🍞 with vegetables inside with some spicy sauce to go with it.

Well let's see if I can make it on my day off.

good post, but I consider from my point of view, that there must be a balance between vegetarian and normal lifestyle.

That meal looks tasty. You know what? You are right. I've found that when I go to the markets, veggies are quite cheaper than meat and its products. It just takes that conscious attempt to make it a lifestyle.
