Building Ninjago with my son. Can he do it?

(Edited)

Inspired by the great article by @whangster79 where he was building lego with his son. I want to share with you one of my offline activities, spending some time with my family.

My son is only 5 and until now, I am mostly building his lego for him. However, he recently received a Ninjago set as a gift and was keen to try and build it himself.

I just needed to guide him to not be like the lego masterbuilders but to follow the instructions! First he opened the package and was sorting the bags out.

We started with the first bag. He was very excited as he got this from one of his former kindergarten friends and they had met early that day.

We look over the instructions together. He is building a Ninjago Dinosaur!

We spread the pieces out so they are nice and easy to find.

The construction makes rapid progress!

Assistance from Daddy isn't need too much.

Part 1 is completed! He isn't bored yet. The attention-span is still there.

We move on to bag number 2 already.

I don't have anything to do yet, just to give encouragement.

The Ninjago dinosaur has legs and is taking shape.

Lucky we have the instructions! Next we move on to the drone! There is a drone in Ninjago!

I needed to help with this part.

I help with adding the wings, but normally I need to finish building things as he loses interest. But today he is still keen to keep building to the end, but is getting impatient to play!

All finished and it's play time!

Thanks for reading.

The dinosaur looks great :-) always loved to make my own constructions with Lego, building whole little worlds to play with.

Bro!~ Thats really awesome that you get to experience with your son the beginnings of a never ending journey of lego! You get to really understand a lot about your sons personality in a different way right?

Also, I had no idea there is a thing called master builders. I clicked on the link and people build legos without any instructions? That sounds so difficult if the build is like Technics. I don't think I can be at that level~ hahaha. Maybe Duplo I can be~

Another thing I realized with kids is that they want to hurry up and finish however this is a battle between thier attention span and thier willing to finish the set. As a result, I always tell my son that its ok not to finish that day, and what I do is try to do is change the activity. The next day after a fresh sleep they tend to do much better and build with more enthusiasm.

We learn a lot with kids everyday~ and especially with legos its always a new experience. Man thats so cool that we are following a path of showcasing what its like to build with kids. I think this can be something that new parents can see, learn, and hopefully follow together. Everyone's experience can be truly unique and I would like to know as well.

Great job for your son brotha!!!~ Only 5 years old and build his set with daddy is a step closer for him to become the master builder!!!

Great post!!!

Hey Whangster,

Thanks for the great inspiration with your post. I thought this would be a great time to let my son take the lead in building his new ninjago lego set.

Normally he would get bored after a few minutes and I would need to build it all, but this time he stuck through to the end so I was very proud. I think he was also very proud of himself.

You are right, we do learn so much from kids and they bring us back down to earth. I am looking forward to him trying some of the bigger sets when he gets bigger and I hope it will bring some passion out in him. Perhaps for cars, designing, construction.. who knows?

Thanks for the tip and I will remember to do that and not feel the urge to complete his project for him. You can see the lego are his favorite toys right now. 😊👍

I love Lego even as an adult and I would still build stuff if I still had Lego.

OH, this is great!
!Luv it

Don't worry about them losing attention at that age, my 5 year old usually goes between 10 and 15 steps until he loses focus. Then we just put it aside and continue the next day.

Keep on building, lego never goes out of style and who knows what he will build in a few years out of the parts :-)

Yeah, with some things you have to be careful that you don't take on some extra things yourself. But Crochet can be good, I have some nice gifts from my mother that are nice homemade jumpers and hats. !CTP
