Exploring Frankfurt Am Main Train Station

Hello Wednesday Walkers,

Another week, another walk! I really added a few steps on this one. I was recently in Frankfurt and thought it may be interesting to walk around and explore the train station. If you are a trainspotter, then this post is for you!

Upon arrival at Frankfurt train station or "Hauptbahnhof", you are greeted by the smell of food from two train-type food trucks positioned outside. They are offering food and drink for hungry travelers.

Looking around you have a mess where much of the carpark is cordoned off but nothing much is happening. In the skyline, you can see many of Frankfurt's banking high-rise buildings.

It is morning rush hour but there aren't so many people heading off into the banking area as before the pandemic.

Before going in, I walked around the station and took some photos of the building.

Once back at the main entrance, I go in and am greeted by a large open hall that feels very welcoming. To my right, there are two coffee shops. The first one is a Starbucks and they are both well visited. A bit further on you have the luggage storage area. People were busy depositing and withdrawing luggage as I was there.

Finally once in the main open area where the trains and platforms are, there are many shops too. I stumbled upon a tourist shop selling Frankfurt trinkets.

The train station is huge and I headed down towards where the regional and underground trains are. Here I saw some homeless people sleeping in makeshift beds.

There is also a huge underground area linking the train station with many of the nearby streets. Much of the roof was open for some reason.

Back overground again, I headed to some of the food stalls and saw plenty of fresh food available for commuters. I grabbed myself a bretzel from Ditzel. It is warm and with salt how I like it.

I continued walking around the main station area whilst refuelling on my bretzel. The day in the life of a trainspotter is never easy.

I see there is a double-decker regional train arriving plus the intercity "ICE" train.

I walk as far as I can outside the station to get some outside shots. You can see the many hangars here and the skyline of Frankfurt with its banking skyscrapers. I understand that the train station should be completely renovated and modernised, but I didn't see much progress on that today.

Back inside the station, I prepare to take my ICE train to my next destination. There is a sign Berlin or Dresden. Which one do I take? Let me know in the comments what you think!

Thanks for joining me on this walk today!

I think it would be both if you travel to Berlin you have to pass Dresden I think. I had a trainride to Berlin once or twice.

You could go through Leipzig to Berlin, but not usually through Dresden to Berlin. Thanks for your guess! !PIZZA

I would pick Dresden: Zwinger, Frauenkirche, Moritzberg castle, Semperoper, Pilnitz castle...I would need a whole week to go everywhere 😁

That is an awesome train station, Steve.
As for me, I would go to Berlin, mostly because I am a History fan and berlin certainly has a history.
Enjoy your trip.

Beautiful buildings! I like that they all look historical but look 'neat' as well. Pretzel/bretzel looks delicious too. Thank you for sharing!

It was a nice place to relax and wait for a train! The Bretzel was also heated with salt, so tasted extra nice. I try to avoid grains, but main an exception on that day! Thanks for dropping by. !ALIVE !CTP

Wow! I would love to try traveling by train in Europe. I've watched some nice sleeper train videos on YT. I think they're pretty awesome. I don't believe we have such nice mode of transport locally. An advance happy weekend!

Homeless people are found sleeping in the train station there in Germany?? That is a common picture in my home country!

Thanks for sharing your photo journey!

Hahahahahahaha, I'm still musing over "bretzel from Ditzel" and saying that 5 times fast!!! My opinion would be to go to Dresden as Berlin is more of a tourist trap and someone else in the comments said that Dresden was a beautiful city.
Also, I love visiting train stations, I do enjoy train and ship watching.
I have an antique collector's train set that has the entire instructions written in German, apparently, during the 60s there was a brass company that decided to make a German train in the TT scale, and that brass company went out of business in 1969 if memory serves me correctly.
Anyways, excellent and fun walk through the train station, it actually feels like I'm accompanying you on your walk @mypathtofire!!!

I do like trains too. I like going on the old steam train ones as they are nostalgic. But I've also been on the Shinkansen which was very cool. The overnight train I took from Moscow was also a great experience.

Next week I have also a final train theme.

The trainset sounds cool, I had just a hornby set when I was younger.

Thanks for visiting from Dreemport and for your guess.

Dam I just saw your Dresden post and looked for the Frankfurt one. I lived in the city for 4 years so I was mad to see if there were any changes. I do like my haubtbahnofs. I found Frankfurt to be colder as much of it is outdoors in one giant hanger. I loved the bahnofs around though such as Frankfurt Sud (where I lived ) that has a fruit market outside it . It's funny how there is a red light district circling the bahnof before you enter the financial quarters. It's actually pretty sleazy around the station but once you get into Frankfurt to the likes of Dom Romer and Haubtwache it is beautiful.
