Can we playtoearn to live? Crypto gaming.

avatar

Most of us here have tried crypto games.

For the most part they are not great with the notable exception of @splinterlands which i loved before it made me any money.

Now that it can actually earn some funds i love it even more.

Now that it is starting to become mainstream along with a few other games we can ask the question.

Can we play games to live?

At the moment this is the initial bubble. The excitement as people discover something new and all of the possibilities that go alongside discovery. Like landing on the moon for the first time. All of that opportunity and space.

The initial hype doesn't last forever and then it's back to the reality. Building and growing over time. A lot will try to copy that initial success but there will be failures along the way. A lot of broken hopes and dreams.

So can it be a sustainable form of income going forward?

We are still in the indie phase

As of now we are seeing lots of small games popping up and gaining traction. Some like splinterlands are even going mainstream as we have seen from all of the media coverage lately and the groups that have been covering it.

Just take a look at the tech section of the UK Sun newspaper. This is a big institution and worth noting their article.

PLAY TO PAY Splinterlands guide: How to make money in the play-to-earn crypto game.
SPLINTERLANDS is a popular trading card game that allows players to battle monsters in exchange for rewards.
So, let's dive into how to play Splinterlands, and how to start earning money.

Source:

With 1.9M twitter followers, they are a big deal.

Splinterlands is the number one crypto based game right now and despite all of this positive attention is still only an indie start up with a few years in the game. Nothing compared to the big boys of gaming.

With the gaming industry estimated to be worth over $160 billion and Esports worth an estimated 1 Billion this year that is an appealing area to get involved with.

If splinterlands are only indie developers then 90% of the current games are only household operations with a handful of devs and no real structure, legality or long term roadmap.

The majority of these will fail over the next couple of years and go the same way as the ICO.

Some will survive and even become powerhouses of the industry but that is a few years down the line.

The big boys will come knocking soon enough to try and barge their way into the industry but we are still early.

They are looking but until we see proper legislation for the space it is a risk to make any big moves in the space.

If we do end up playing to live, we will have to pay for play.

Death and Taxes.

image.png

For those of us that do survive another year of the pandemic we will have to deal with the taxes.

This hasn't been a concern up until now as all of the money was going into the game but if we are aiming to earn a living from crypto games then we will need to cover our bases the same as any other job.

Unfortunately, current legislation doesn't cover this area as it is so new and we have to try and fit a circle into a square.

We will have to try our best to cover the legalities of the tax system as best we can but this is made difficult by a lack of clarity and rules which do not fit the situation.

While this is tough enough for an individual, it's just not going to happen for a big studio until they know where the line is going to fall.

Putting millions into a space or games that might get heavily restricted at any time. Or build a userbase of millions that are breaking the law.

They will come and in a big wave when that pathway is cleared but i don't see it happening until then.

Therein lies the opportunity for the indie companies to become the big names in this space.

Their opportunity cost is much lower and they are agile and adaptable. The space is open and free form competition for the innovators and the leaders of the movement.

Who is going to make it count.

I am going to try.

I saw a tweet from one of the NFTstudio creators that wanted to create opportunity for the next generation of play to earn gamers.

NFT Studios’ primary mission is getting 100 million players to earn $100,000 USD a year by playing our games.
We hope you can join us on this wonderful journey starting early 2022 Robot face
Source:

This is an aspirational goal and just one studio of many. If they can make this happen for even a fraction of these numbers it will be a huge success. Never mind all of the other indie games that are out there.

If any game can create an income of even $10,000 for it's players then it is a huge success.

My money is with @splinterlands to lead this charge as they are further down the line than anybody. Land, tournaments, partnerships, crafting, SPS.....

It's all building to something more and we should be excited. If any game is going to create a play to live opportunity for us then it will be that team.

Then they will become a powerhouse in their own rights and a name that is recognized across esports.

I can't wait and will be ready when it does.

Hmmm, Entropia Universe had to get some sort of fiduciary license several years back. Not sure if that was due to them paying players who request it or not. However as Entropia Universe has been a P2E game for over 10 years it may be worth while for blockchain games to look into any legal precedents set forth by them.

I've never heard of them but i'll do a bit of research. It's sounds like an interesting example and something to learn from for the latest batch of games.

Streaming is an interesting option for gamers. I'll look into it after xmas and see if it's possible to do a bit with splinterlands.

There were lots of people looking to learn the game so there could be a market for new players looking to watch.

The Sun covering Splinterlands is huge. 2022 will be a big year for monster grinders. And hopefully for @nftstudios as well. ;-)

When you start to see the name popping up in mainstream places like the sun, you know that we are moving in a good direction.

Now it might not be the highest quality of publication but it is mainstream.

Looking forward to @nftstudios and chifibots too.

Big things for 2022. You have plenty to look forward to on that side too.

I think we can play games and make a living but it would probably require quite a bit of work. Having a few different streams of incomes is probably the thing they need to do the most because anything can happen. I think live-streaming will also work to an extent if you use places like VIMM because you will earn a little bit as well.

I might have a look at streaming on vimm and twitch. It could be an interesting experiment for a few weeks and see if there is an audience for it.

It will take multiple revenue streams but can be done.

There probably is an audience for it but it probably won't be large. It will probably take quite a bit of commitment before things do work but I think VIMM does try its best to at least reward the people streaming over there. So it may just be an extra dollar or so every stream.

If we do end up playing to live, we will have to pay for play.

That aspect of phrase need time for me to understand.

I believe splitnerland is sti in the early stage and still developing but certainly the gaming world in the blockchain is going to a pattern whereby one play to live soon or if I say some are already playing to live

Just that if it becomes a money maker, we will need to do it legitimately. We will have to lose some of it to taxes.

Playtoearn will be big and it's just a matter of it maturing as an industry.

The games of the future will be built on blockchains and utilise NFTs. Can you imagine the excitement for players if they can own their weapons, coins, items etc and some games might even support cross pollination where you can take skins or whatever from one game and into another. That last bit is a long way away but who knows what might be possible in the next generation of gaming.

I still haven't gotten into Splinterlands, i tried to, but was a bit overwhelmed with so much to learn and I don't really have much spare time to allocate to it..

I wonder if that was a paid article or they covert it on their own, because they thought it would be of interest for their readers. In the end the result is the same, but if they did it on their own that shows Splinterlands is going mainstream deeper and faster than many of us thought it would. Maybe faster than crypto itself.
