Cash is disappearing fast.

Soon everything will be traceable..

It started with this.

AIB is to turn 70 of its 170 branches into cashless outlets as a result of what it has claimed is declining demand for these services.
Ref: RTE

That would b e Allied Irish bank who are one of the major players in the industry here.

They say that it's down to a decline in demand which is partly true but they don't say how they have reduced all of their cash services to the point that you can't use them anymore.

They refuse to take coins or exchange outside of a few hours of a window every week.

They are not even the first bank to do this as a lot of the smaller banks are now assistance hubs rather than real banks that offer cash services.

3 Days later.

AIB has abandoned plans to go cashless in 70 branches after "public unease".

And by public unease it is PR for massive public and government backlash that make them run back to head office and tuck tail.

People love cash.

It's quick, it's easy and most importantly it's untraceable. Nobody has ever wanted more government surveillance which is all that this decision will bring.

Everybody that i have ever known is a fan of bending the laws a little bit and bypassing a few of the more excessive regulations like tax, benefits and grants.

They don't need to know everything that is going on in our lives. As long as we are working away and contributing a fair share then passing a few extra euros one way or another is none of their business.

But it is coming.

We are all going digital at some stage so it's up to us to find new ways of staying off the grid when we need to.

Because cash is going sooner rather than later.

They will hit the kids first and wait for us older folk to die off with our set in stone ways.

All bars will be operating contactless only.

No cash for pints????

This is terrible news for all if the kids.

Now we do have crypto but it's going to be an uphill battle to keep privacy coins up and running with the way governments feel about privacy.

And everything on a blockchain will be visible to anybody looking.

Cash was a simple but elegant solution for a lot of these cases but it's going to take something new going forward as cash is phased out by banks and businesses.

I'm not excited about a cashless society either.

Nope.

I always have a bit of cash lying around and it's very handy on a day to day basis.

If you want small jobs done it's always going to be in cash.

This is one of the reasons why I've deliberately used significant amounts of cash each month. You can do your part in combating the prevailing trend by using cash whenever you can.

That's a good point.

If more people try to use cash for purchases it will give them a reason to keep it going.

I used to be fully cash but i spend crypto from my card now as that is where the earnings come from and there is 3% cashback on my purchases.

That's hard to beat.

I have to admit I haven't used cash for years and only the other day I drew some for the first time to pay for car guards. These are one up from beggars as they actually provide a service even though limited. You don't need cash anymore as the payment options are here for a cash less society. I think if you don't have legit money as in non declared earnings you may struggle in the future to off load it.

Banks love cashless, because they charge small businesses 1-3% of every debit/credit card transaction. Think how much that will increase when there isn't the competition from cash.

Governments and big business love cashless for the data it gives them. How long before "Our information shows us you had three pints last month, your life insurance company will contact you with an unhealthy lifestyle surcharge to your premium" turns into "Your social credit score prohibits you from buying alcohol. Any further deterioration in your score will prohibit you from buying food."

Sure, for the average joe down the pub who no longer gets to withdraw cash for his beer, taking the private route is too hard.

However, I'd then argue that if its too hard, it means he doesn't really care about privacy after all, so there's no problem.

There's no denying that the decentralised tech cat is already out of the bag and there's no stuffing it back in.

He still has a choice.

He just chooses the easier route.

No matter what governments and regulators do or say from this point out, there will always a permissionless alternative available to people who want to use it.

I think it was bound to happen as we rely more on technology and the elderly people who are technology adverse are slowly disappearing. After all, it's just convenient to swipe a card or your phone.

I hate not having cash in my wallet. And I use it whenever I can. Even if it is to piss off who ever I am paying. For me it is not "Cash Friday" but more like "Cash Every Day"!

Yup I have seen this firsthand in festivals… but ticket or Virtual card that you charge (minimum of course). That way if there is cash left on it or if you forget about the 3-4€ on there, extra money for them!

They want electronic payments to surveil us all!

I think cash is good because it save us from spending spree. And we get to save a lot of money during purchases compared to when we use electronic means where everything we desire can be charged to our cards or paid with crypto
