It's Ok To Be Nostalgic... sometimes

This past week, I've been feeling a little nostalgic with sharing my latest bootleg creation around the Really Wild Show theme tune from the 90s.

It got me thinking that's all well and good but spending too much time thinking about the past can warp your vision of where you are now.

What I have noticed is that I get strong feelings of nostalgia when something has gone awry in the present. Like really awry! The strongest bout of that hit me hard when I started playing tennis again after not playing for many years at an old tennis club, meeting friends who I've not seen for what must have been close to a decade!

It was an incredibly strange mix of going back in time whilst being in the present but we're all a little older.

Time waits for no-one and it's the most finite resource we'll ever have.

So what can we do about it?

It's all about the Present

The emotion of nostalgia can really grip hard if your present situation isn't what you want it to be or something is unsettling you deeply about it.

This unsettling causes the mind to draw on memories from happier days, usually when we were kids and life was generally a lot simpler. It's like you're longing for those days again.

Unfortunately, our memories can often be warped and only thinks about the good things that happened, blotting out the negatives that also happened at that time.

There's nothing wrong about thinking about the good days. If anything, they are there to serve as a pick-me-up for when you're feeling down but it really is all about the present.

To Better Days

If you can sort out your present situation to make it better then you won't be longing for those past memories that the warped visions of nostalgia provides.

What you should be aiming to do is work on creating new memories from this present moment in time. It doesn't have to be anything drastic, just something that gets you out of the situation of a nostalgic mindset and to better days.

So I'm just going to segue quickly into a 30 minute drum and bass mix I did combining some new and old tunes around this time last year, which was called "To Better Days".

I was in a really bad place mentally back then but over the course of 2021, I've worked a lot on mindset changes. There were some deep introspective sessions going on and I went offline for a few months to get away.

Best thing I did.

It refined my focus, helped me start the action of doing things and working alongside Che on The Bitcoin Manual gave me some sense of purpose before hitting a music production streak I've not had for a long time!

Now I'm not stopping there and the final piece of the puzzle is changing career, something that will take time but whoever said it was going to be easy?

Yes, it's good to look back in the past for an escape mechanism but only sometimes. Draw on what you can but don't stay in the past, your future isn't yet set so focus on the present.

I've come to learn that if you're feeling nostalgic, it's perhaps a sign to take little steps to change your current situation.

You got this!

Nicky

Nostalgia can be dangerous if you let it get you down, for sure; I think, for me, it's due to a thought that those years are spent and not coming back. On the flipside, however, it's nice to know that you have something to feel nostalgic about! Having positive memories is a nice thing to have.

I agree with you, it's a double edged sword is our friend nostalgia! Good in small doses but make some new ones. Once time is spent, you don't get a refund!
