Sneak Preview Of A New Liquid DnB Track I'm Working On - Music Box

Music Box.jpg

It's early days with this new production I'm playing around with at the moment. After yesterday's nature hike, I felt refreshed enough to pop open the music software and see what I could find. Turns out there's a few new features in the latest version of FL Studio (the music software I use) and one of the synthesisers I use called "Kontakt" had an instrument called "Kinetic Treats" which is what you see in the screenshot of the cover image above.

As I played on the midi keyboard, the music box, robot and all kinds of things started their animations on the display which was really cool! I then settled from my initial excitement to put a few chords together and it created the mysterious sounds you hear in the second half of this little demo clip below - secret soundcloud link below if you wanted to hear a quick 90 seconds of where I'm at at the moment:

I would have kept the sounds of the music box synth in for this demo but they were quite annoying in honesty. When I get back to work on in it then I'll see if I can have the intro starting off with the clicky-clacky sounds. In the end, I used a different synth to make the melody but the whole thing stemmed from playing around in the music box, so I've called this one "Music Box"... I know, original lol!

So far, I've just used a drum loop sample that I'll be editing and adding to from my own drum kits as I usually like to do to give it some uniqueness. There's a lot of dnb tunes out there that use the same drum loops and you're like, "oh I remember hearing that from a track in the mid 2000s..."! Still, if the tune is good, it doesn't really matter! Other than that, I've got a deep rumbling sub bassline that I made that features in most of my tunes and a cheeky phased rhythmic pattern floating on top.

Anyway, let me know what you think and we'll see what happens when I build this Music Box up even more in the coming weeks!

Nicky

Random fact. Contact spelled in danish is "Kontakt" xD

Hahaha! Maybe it is a Danish company that came up with the synthesiser! Either way, I do love the Kontakt VST! One of my favourites in my music software for sure!

Ayyy, you're back on Hive! (And how am I not following you, wtf...)

Glad you got refreshed by nature, and even more glad that you cracked open FruityLoops!

That classic dnb drum loop is a reliable, consistent, beloved staple for a reason. I couldn't help bobbing to the beat as soon as I heard it, and it really just allows the other more unique sounds to do their thing and stand out more against the familiar loop.

Great 90sec. teaser! 🙏

Yeah man! Popped back on, just had to creatively vent this week with blogging and sharing tunes! No worries about not following, just expect some downvotes coming your way lol 😂 (not really)

Can't beat going outside to unwind and flush the bad thoughts out!

Thanks for checking this early days WIP out. Plenty more elements to throw at it and will see how it all plays out in the coming weeks in the new music box 😁

Well, I'm loving what you're sharing and am glad you're here. And don't worry, you've been followed now, hehe. (Not sure downvotes are needed, the mega-guide on How To Be Smarter I posted yesterday doesn't seem to be performing as well as my others, lol.)

Seconded about outside :)

I'm psyched to see how it all fleshes out. I'm actually playing around with recording my first rap vocals today. I have no sound equipment, a ghetto mic, and a noisy room, I'm sure it will go fine. 🤣

Haha! Thanks for good vibes mate and I gave you some reverse downvotes on that one! That's the way it goes sometimes here, some posts do better than others, there's no point in trying to figure it out and just go with the flow 😎

Ohhh nice one on the recording! Hope you can cancel out some of the noise from the background! I am hoping when I move in to my new place and get the studio set up there that I can get some acoustic foam set up around the room to minimise the background noise and get it sounding professional up in here! Nothing like a pro bedroom producer set up with the bed in the background of the video - that's when you've made it haha 👌

Ayyy, feelin' the love bro. Haha "reverse downvotes", haha, such a gold turn of phrase.

Yep, I don't take it personally, just enjoying my life, it is what it is :)

I actually did record the vox today, and was able to clean them up in a sound program. They're not pro mixed-and-mastered or anything, but passable for literally my first full song ever recorded outside of plays or something when I was a kid.

A lot of great things have been made in bedroom studios, looking forward to it :D 😆

Lol! Bedroom production for the win! When you have your vox uploaded, let me know, would be great to hear it!

We-ell... they're technically 'done,' but I'm gonna scrap them and perhaps do another 20 takes or find a studio or something. For now, back to writing (this time about gaming) -- vocally, I'll keep you posted as I progress, lol :)

You had me at Music Box. Can't tell you how many performances I've seen at Music Box in Hollywood Nicky but absolutely, positively can say some of the most memorable.

Now get back outside!!

(the reason for all the edits is cuz I can never remember correct spLeLing of your damn name!)

I can see how some of the nights at the Music Box would give you an epic night. Some of the photos on the site look like the clientele are of a high calibre 😉

Summer is over here in the UK now, we had our 3 days of sunshine so outdoors may be off the cards 😛

"Hurry, hurry step right up!! Buy one get 10 free sunblock and no lines at the car wash!! Hurry! Hurry!"

Some of the bigger talents I've see there I'm sure you've heard of are Atmosphere, Yelawolf, Zac Brown Band. Heard those guys? I honestly can't tell you how many times I've been there. It was called Henry Fonda Theater before Music Box. Blink 182... No Doubt.. these are just the ones off the top of my head.

Hmmm, I've not actually heard of those guys you've mentioned. I'm stuck in the 2004-2009 era of dnb at the moment and just enjoying those vibes at the moment. I've heard of Blink 182 - my best friend from school was/is a big fan!

Fair enough. I dropped'em all hoping you'd at least heard of one. Mission accomplished.

Thanks for noticing. I enjoy this place. This is still my first and only social media type experience but I'm glad I found it. Before I knew about the platform we were traveliving, I just didn't have anywhere to save pictures and stuff so I'd email it to my own email. One thing led to another and Tada!!

Covid struck, we're in a strange place surrounded by strange people, fill in the blanks, can't leave (still). You guys ain't a bad way to spend time.

Enjoyment is a strong fuel. :)

I'm on 'every' social platform, but I'm enjoying this one the most so far. Funny how a journey to save pics led to an whole 'digital life' of sorts.

The feeling's mutual. 😀

Good morning dude. I just read my comment again and kinda feel like explaining traveliving since we haven't been engaging very long. Not a lifestyle I invented but I absolutely invented that word!

We were in EU when Covid hit last year. Hauled ass for UK before shit got weird and, well, it's no secret how restricted the UK is right now, really fucked ourselves on that one—stuck for 7 months! <- That's not a tipeoh. We were in Italy at the time, anyone who's been to Italy for 30 days or more knows that's the last place you wanna get stuck! So at least we weren't there.

Thought for sure this would be over in a couple weeks. 7 months later my passport duration is expiring, just kept waiting til the last minute because planes weren't leaving the ground. Dude that shit got intense. Literally on the last day of my passport we were able to catch a flight. My wife is British so she was ok but 'Covid' meant the hoops to jump through so I could extend myself on her passport were closed.

Flew to Florida after being outside for two years and it was way too hot!! So we came to Tennessee cuz I like to ride mountain bikes but honestly thought we'd only be here a few months and we'd be back doing what we're good at—traveliving.

What month is it now? Doesn't matter. All I know is we're still here. But at least now you know what I mean now, which means now I can enjoy the rest of this coffee.

Ayyyy, good morning to you too! (Is Tennessee the same timezone as Toronto?)

I felt confident enough to assume that 'traveliving' was basically half-nomadic, lol. Your explanation adds much needed clarity, so thank you.

I've been fairly stationary, geographically for awhile now (ie: before covid), but I think it'd be nice to travel more.

Your story here (complete with global pandemic & nailbiting miss-the-flight cliffhangers) could probably make a good movie.

I won't get started on hoop-jumping. Grr. :)

And it's coffee-time for me as well. 😁

It's great to see you back behind the wheel mate, just what I need at 7 in the AM. The track has that subtle mysteriously dark vibe that I enjoy. I was almost meditating on it but then it was cut short, lol.

Haha thanks Calum mate! Hope it helped supercharge your morning for the brief 90 second period! That's as far as I have got at the moment so we'll all have to wait and see how this one pans out! I am liking the dark mysterious part though, may have to expand that bit for sure!

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the full release! Have you got any thoughts on a different name or are you just keeping it as Music Box? (not a bad name at all to be fair)

I haven't got any thoughts to be honest! I am hoping I can make the music box element more pronounced as I work through but if not, I'll probably keep the name. Unless something dramatically changes in the track or it comes from a negative experience that I'd rather forget and move on from during it's production, I tend to stick with the first name I gave to it.

Open to suggestions though if you have any!
