MY FIRST EARNINGS AND HOW THEY HELPED ME

Grandma wasn't financially buoyant enough to provide for my educational needs. Things weren't rosy, she engages in a daily cooking business to make ends meet. She educated me on how life can be with different people and the need to always seek good solutions to survive. I supported her business so much because I know that it was the source of our daily meals and other basic needs. It was only she to cater for all expenses at home, her husband died many years ago when she was pregnant with her last child. So the major thing my grandma is always concerned about was my tuition fee and my exercise books. Every other thing I need like textbooks and other academic materials is a secondary need due to insufficient funds even when it's necessary.

Of course, I understood the situation with my grandma, but as a senior secondary student then, so dedicated to her academics, and who was eager to succeed, I saw the need to purchase the English and Maths textbooks recommended by my teacher and also a Scientific calculator. I told my grandma about my plans on getting these items for my schooling, she wished she could just purchase that for me to save me the stress but there was not even enough money to feed the family well then. So I came up with the plan of going to the forest to get a kind of firewood some people buy in the market. Grandma didn't like this idea of going to the forest, not a tick forest anyway but she wasn't just comfortable with that, however, I promised her that I would be very careful and that she has nothing to worry about.

On the quest for making this money, I left very early in the morning for the forest. I had my cutlass and some local ropes to tie the firewood. Lucky enough for me, I got a good kind of firewood that people loved to buy. I sold it and made #200. I was so much excited. I returned the second day and the third day sold all the firewood and got a total amount of #700 ($1). Then things were very cheap, imagine a dollar 💰 then was able to get the two recommended textbooks I needed with a scientific calculator and I still had a change of #50. My joy knew no bounds that period. My grandma was so proud of me, she shed tears anyway...she felt bad that she couldn't provide "all" that I needed but I assured her that it's not something to bother about, she has thought me to be hardworking and I just did a part of that to raise the money I needed.

I returned to the school the next week with books and the scientific calculator* and felt so much belonged. Imagine seeing almost all my classmates with theirs and I didn't have one. The joy I felt in purchasing these academic materials with my hard-earned money was extraordinary. As I use the materials, I remember the sweat, the scorching sun that hurt me, the long distance I trek, and others 😃, but most importantly, the materials assisted my academics. certainly, the journey of wealth is not an easy peasy one.

This was the very first time I made money and used it to buy something of great value in my life.

Your grandma would have been very proud of you. I liked the fact that you did not just sit to accept the condition of things but instead you went out there to find a solution to what you needed. That is a good quality for a little girl, imagine how much she does have now as a grown-up woman.

Yes, she was so proud of me! She wasn't expecting that I will go to that extent of making the money myself.

Awwwwwn 🥰, thank you so much Star for your soothing words....

It's hard for me to understand that education and textbooks aren't free everywhere. In Sweden school is mandatory for 9 years, then there's 2-4 years of voluntary highschool to prepare either for university studies or some kind of job. All free, books included! The first 9 years you even get notebooks, pencils, lunch... basically the only things you need to provide yourself are gym clothes and a swimsuit. College/University is free too, but there you have to buy the books yourself, and pay a membership fee to the student union. That gets you a student ID which comes with a ton of discounts on everything from train tickets to textbooks, computers and going to the movies, so it more than pays for itself.

Great job on getting the books and calculator you needed by working for them! I'm not sure I would have had the discipline or ambition to do that.

I have heard a lot about free Education up secondary level and almost free in the university level in some countries, however Nigeria is not like one. I didn't experience anything free during my time and even now , it's just few states that gives primary education free in government schools and of less quality education

How come the government schools give a lower quality education? Do they offer lower salaries so they don't get the best teachers, or don't they teach the same things?

Here it's the other way around! All schools were government run until 1992 (except a few boarding schools,) when the "freeschool-reform" happened, allowing almost anyone to start a school. They're still free to attend, and they get money from the government for each student that signs up, just like the government run schools.

But to attract students, the privately owned schools give very good grades, and offer things like a free laptop or iPad. Research has found that students from these schools, even though they have higher grades, don't so as well in secondary level education as students with the same or lower grades from government run schools. On average, the private school students are given 0.5-1 point higher grades than they deserve, just to make the school look good!

It is actually good to teach one How to make money so that it will be spent wisely. Thank God for you who bought all that you need in school with your hard earn money.
Thanks for sharing.

Hmmmm just like me
I couldn't think of anything else than my school fee and textbooks
Thank God you don't make use of the money to buy something that doesn't have any meaning

Because back then in school I do see some of my class mate buying food with their text book money that their parents gave them
I don't blame them because they have someone that can give them

So I couldn't copy them because I know what I went through before getting my money so I couldn't spend it anyhow like them
And more so I don't like eating outside so buying food at the canteen then was a hell for me

That tears your grandma shed then was like being happy you did that and on the other hand, was unhappy because she couldn't provide them for you to save you that much stress but it's all gone today. It's the only memory you will keep reminding and would be a story to your children too.

That feeling you were able to get those textbooks cannot be quantified because you would feel a sense of belonging and responsibility then.
