LEADERSHIP ON THE BLOCKCHAIN

One of my major goals on hive in 2022 is to build a community of like-minded people with similar goals and interests. With the help of a few people, I have been able to set things in motion, with a few bottlenecks which I want to discuss briefly in this post.

I have never seen myself as a leader, mainly because I dislike the spotlight (and people-occasionally). But aside from the spotlight and my occasional dislike for people, I think leadership is quite challenging. There is a lot to factor in when leading a group. First, you need to be a good example to your followers, this would engender their confidence in your abilities or promises.

Secondly, a leader should be charismatic to a certain degree. Most people are unwilling to motivate themselves, and it is almost impossible to get anything done without the right incentive. Now it is quite tricky with hive or anything related to this ecosystem because most people come here for the money, not the social experience nor to build, but mainly money–they want to earn.

If as a leader on hive you are unable to help your followers or community members earn a lot on hive they might move elsewhere where the grass is greener. This often leads to the polarization of attention to a few individuals with deep pockets and upvotes.

In my opinion, one of the major aims of creating communities is to decentralize further. In other words, move away from the center entities on hive. This way people with similar interests can connect and this, in turn, improves the social experience which I feel is lacking on hive.

Thirdly, leading a couple of people opens you to criticism, disappointments and even failure. Hive is highly tribal and oftentimes you find people having squabbles over silly things which are blown out of proportion. Oftentimes those at the hem of affairs suffer a negative backlash from their involvement in certain projects.

When it comes to disappointment, I have realized that a lot of people do not take this place as seriously as I do and it is understandable. People have lives outside this space and they can’t be as involved as I would want. So most projects and initiatives don’t scale as much as they should and as a leader, you have to deal with these failures.

Leading people can be challenging but it can also be rewarding as well. I have found a new purpose on the chain. It feels good helping other people (in any capacity). Aside from helping other people, I also feel like an integral part of the hive community as I help in its growth.

Also, I think my communication skill has improved since I started working on other projects. Through community work, I have been able to collaborate and learn from other people which is something I am not very good at, so that has been a plus for me.

Lastly, I am learning to work with what I have. As a leader, you have very precise goals and most times you do not have the resources to get you to the point you want. So you either procrastinate or make excuses. However, I have realized that you cannot sell your vision to everyone, but when you find those who do understand and want to be part of your vision, you will make significant progress.
