WE DON'T WORK LIKE WE USED TO...

Earlier today I was trying to figure out how many times I have been to the bank this year for personal reasons. The only time I can think of was in February and that was to retrieve my debit card.

These days we have bank apps, debit cards, cryptocurrency, etc. The need for bankers or physical banking services has drastically reduced over the years. We don't even need to deal with the banks directly as there are alternative payment platforms that offer you virtual services for your daily transactions.

On the 1st of October, the Central bank of Nigeria will launch its coin, the e-naira, which they will have absolute control over. There is the fear that this move might take the banks out of the picture which at this point is inevitable (even without the government initiative).

So I find it quite perplexing to discover that a lot of people are still spending a lot of money on tuition fees to become bankers. Now, I am not saying that bankers will not be needed in the nearest future, far from that. However, the demand for bankers will slowly reduce.

It is quite unfortunate that most universities in this part of the world aren't preparing their students for the future. The last time most federal universities reviewed their curriculum was in the 1900s which is quite worrisome.

So basically, people are being equipped with old tools for the future. Also, many young people still believe that a college degree is a ticket to a better life but they've been disappointed.

I know colleagues from uni who are still looking for a job. They are probably in a worse state than they were while in uni. The labour market is saturated and it has donned on many that there are no jobs.

It is quite unfortunate that even when I try to introduce these sets of people to cryptocurrency (or Hive) they resist. They would rather stay hopeful over a nonexistent job than try something new. For me, this is all I need to know that they are not ready for the future.

I graduated 2 years ago with a degree in insurance but I am yet to practise. Chances are I will never practise. My interests have taken me on a different path which has not only been fulfilling but also revealing.

I have been opened to a new world of opportunities. It is unimaginable to think or do anything else. I have also learnt new skills and interacted with people across the globe which has broadened my horizon.

It is no news that the world around us is changing and at an alarming rate. However, many are still hell-bent on thinking the same in terms of scarcity of holding on to their archaic outlook on life.

Those who aren't preparing for the future will suffer. This is a harsh truth but it is the truth nevertheless. I know and understand the fear that comes with being innovative and trying out new things but it is the safest bet for the future.

If I was told a decade ago that I would be making a living sharing my thoughts and opinions, all from the comfort of my home, I would have doubted completely. But this is my reality and that of thousands of people across the globe.

The future is nothing like we expect. Thus, we need to pay attention to the changes around us to make the right bets. A lot of our lives depend on making the right call. What are you betting on?

Degree in insurance?? That's a new one. Did you study that for 4 years?

Nigeria's educational system is trash. It has nothing to offer for real-world problems. And really, the only use of a degree is the ease it might provide (if you have the money) to leave the country.

Yes. Same with @blezyn. The only difference between both of us is that she is practising while i am chasing the crypto dream

Spot on! the only real incentive to finish my programme was that i needed it to migrate, nothing more.

Bro... You are spot on.
I studied Banking and Finance frok start to finish and I was lucky enough to serve in a bank. That's where my eyes opened to the life of bankers in addition to the type of pressure the pass through on that seat.

Ever since then, I made up my mind that the typical conventional banking work is not my thing. Thank goodness, what Crypto offers is looking very promising.

if there was ever a thing that I knew I did not want to be in this life it will be a banker. I almost landed a job at one of the top banks in Nigeria but I am grateful it did not work out because I would be miserable.

There are people who enjoy being part of the cooperate world and space, I am just not one of them. Do share your bank experience sometime. would make for a good read

Sure... I will do just that.
Funny enough, whenever I speak about my disinterest in the banking sector, people always think that I served there for a whole year as a Corper. But, that's far from the fact.

I Started service during the week that Covid19 kicked off so, the whole lockdown that came with it made me to only do my PPA activity for the last two months of my service year.

What I saw in two months made me to tick bank work as a No-no. I wonder how people start and finish their career in similar setting.

E no easy

You have touched on two important issues in your post... I'm not sure I want to comment banking part as I would like to see them gone ASAP... :) I don't think that they will "disappear" because of e-naira, or any other government coins... They are working closely with any government around the world, but I do hope that cryptocurrencies will REPLACE banks in a certain amount... We only ask for a choice... At the moment, we HAVE TO use banks, but it would be nice to "opt-out" from them...

And the educational part of your post is something that's a problem everywhere... The education system is old, children are learning stuff that has no sense with anything today, that are old and forgotten... It needs a big revision, and the only way would be some kind of self-education, which is already present...

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

Thanks for the nomination. In regards to the banking sector, I think a lot of disruptive technologies in the next few years will make it almost obsolete--it is happening already.

In regards to education, I learn new and interesting things just by watching youtube tutorials (I wonder why people have to pay so much in tuition fees). The Information online is quite large and useful. The only thing the schools offer is structure and apps are providing this already for those willing to learn.

Nice post @nonsowrites, all the points you made were valid, but just had to point out something, e-naira is not crypto because it's not decentralized, it's just digital naira.

This 21 century is worst time to be a bank due to the technology development and cryptocurrency is taking the world by storm, no matter how government try to fight it , crypto it not going anywhere.

I taught in a secondary school 2 years ago, it was a disaster all through. For someone who gets up to date information on issues around the world, having to teach from out dated and irrelevant text books was horrible for me, because I was bound to follow the syllabus.

Omo! teaching is one job I dread in this part of the world. You are so limited by the curriculum, and it seems deliberate--to keep the masses uneducated or under-educated.
