The Medicinal attributes of a palm tree and palm wine.

The palm tree grows and florishes where there is equally a hot sun and heavy rainfall, the palm tree is commonly found in some parts of south America, asia and also Africa. It has a life span of about 100 years.
Palm trees have numerous advantages,their leaves are used as roofs and their fruits are a rich source oil and soup.
There are different types of palm tree, they are identified by the shapes of their leaves and the trunk


My conern is the unique importance of palm tree which is the palm wine.
Palm wine is a not so alcoholic beverage gotten from the juice of the palm tree.

Palm wine is a very common household drink in nigeria, taken by all gender, young or old.
Served in occasions, commonly seen with elders.


  • Palm wine is very sweet, i must say I'm craving it right now, apart from its sweetness, it has numerous importance. I remember while we're growing up when measles and small pox are very rampant, we used to bathe with palm wine because its cleanse off these infections.
    Its has a rich medicinal importance

  • Majorly palm wine is good for the sight, infact this is why it is taken by the old ones, to give them good sight. It also aids sleeping, it fights off any form of insomnia and In women it encourages lactation, nursing mothers tends to take this more to improve the breats milk.

  • Economically, palm wine has contributed to the economy growth by providing job for the palm wine tappers, Also help with the conservation of the palm tree.

how is palm wine gotten from the palm tree?

This is the real deal, because getting the juice from the tree its not that easy.
The picture above shows the palm wine tapper climbing on to the palm tree, to collects the juice, its gotten from cuting the tree flower and a container is attached to the cut flower (the opening) to colect the juice this sometimes takes days, meanwhile the tapper will continue to check and monitor, the whitish liquid collected is the palm wine, so sweet and at first is non alcoholic but due to the natural yeast it becomes alcoholic when its fermented that is exposed to air for a very long time, but its alcohol content is not that high as the industrial beer or gin. This is why people prefer taking the fresh palm wine than the fermented one.

When I lived in Cambodia, this was a very common thing to see sold on the streets. As I don't drink alcohol, sometimes I would get lucky enough to buy palm juice before the fermentation had started. What a delicious and healthy treat.
