Pretty sure this was just a misspell that people enjoyed, like when 'pwned' was going around in the gaming community.

I like this one, because it makes a nice acronym for "Hold On for Dear Life"

Living in NY, I can't legally trade much crypto, so all the 'earned' stuff I get (like Hive) I do hold long term.

You are right, presumably some drunk guy on a bitcointalk.com forum used the term and it stuck.

This is also a popular and appropriate take on it.

Living in NY, I can't legally trade much crypto, so all the 'earned' stuff I get (like Hive) I do hold long term.

Living in a developing country I don't have access to many ways to cash out, so I'll see you at the end of the holding long term tunnel.
