My Experience Staying In A Flooded Compound.

this experience is about 2 years or 3 years now, I don't have pictures to back it up, so I will try to paint you a picture with my story

it all started on a beautiful morning and was unexpected, we woke up to see a little bit of waterlogging in the compound, we all thought it was the water tank that was filled and overflowed, we all dismissed it, thinking it will dry up before we come back home from work when I came back from work that day the water increased a bit but coincidentally it rained heavily that day, so I thought it was the rain, maybe an overflow from the water drainage system around our estate.

the next morning was a different story entirely, the front of the compound was covered with water but we could still pass through it, we called the landlord of the house and he told us that the water will dry off that it wasn't the first time (a big lie), we believe him and we all went to work on getting back home, the water has increased more but has not yet gotten uncontrollable, we the boys who lived in the compound decided to do something about the water before it gets worst not knowing that our efforts were going to be in vain the next morning.

we tried our best to push the water back a bit by clearing up the drainage system, so the water could follow away from our compound and it worked out at that time, but the next morning gave us a huge shocking surprise, we woke up hearing those who lived downstairs shouting than the water is entering their rooms, I was staying on the upper floor of the house, I and some others who lived upstairs rushed downstairs to help them park their properties upstairs into the storeroom and two empty rooms, to protect them from getting damaged.

we managed to move their properties as fast as we could, unfortunately, we could not save them all, but we did our best and saved the most important things first, but one of our housemates was unlucky because he traveled two days before the flood incident happened. We tried to break into his apartment because he traveled with his room key but we couldn't before he could get back to Lagos his room was already filled with water.

there wasn't light(electricity) at that moment, we were happy but at the same time we were so scared of being electrocuted when the lights comes because the water level has gotten to the electric socket level, that was scary as hell, but for two days during the flood, there wasn't light, it was good and bad at the same time, our phones were drained but at least no one was electrocuted. we managed to put off the light switch for downstairs,

we saw some things that I was shocked about, inside the water we could see some live fish, then we started wondering and praying that there were no snakes in the water, which got so many people scared, they ran and left the house, I and some other housemates who had no relatives around or where to run too we had to stay in the compound but to be on the safe we all got rain boots, so we can be able to work and get back. it got so bad a few days after that we had to climb and jump over the fence of another company to be able to go out.

Not just my compound was affected by the flood, like half of my estate was affected also the roads too were covered by the flood, after a few days of suffering this situation, the landlord calls us and told us that we shouldn't be upset, that flood is something that happens every 4 years that the flood will be over soon, and everything will be back to normal soon, after lying to us a few days earlier.

Soon he told us, took like 2 to 3 weeks for the flood to dry up, after the flood the down floor of my compound was smelling so bad, we all had to help those living downstairs to clean up their rooms and clean up the compound generally. the 2 to 3 weeks for the flood was the worst experience I got in Lagos aside from the long hours of gridlock traffic. but I still had some lovely moments to remember too.

I can feel your pain lol I have only been in a situation like that once but luckily it rained during the day so most of the properties where saved since we were home, but it took almost a week to get the house back in order afterwards.
