Memories and meanings

Reflecting on the word of the week chosen by @calumam, I remembered that the first time I heard about the concept of equanimity, in this case, the word in question was “equanimous”(pt-br: equânimo), it was in one lecture of the Bible. I do not remember the right time, but I believe that I heard more times in similar contexts (preaching).

The reading was from verse 1 of chapter 4 of the Colossians

Pt-br:

Colossenses 4:1 - Biblia King James.

Literal translation:

Gentlemen, treat your servants fairly and in equanimous ways, knowing that you also have a Lord in heaven.
Colossians 4: 1 - King James Bible.

When searching for the term, I found that in the English version, the term used is equal, rather than equanimous (at least in a more literal version).

Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
Colossians 4:1 - King James Bible.

Remembering that was very interesting because in general, I don't remember seeing this concept at other times, well, maybe I read it somewhere, or heard it, but not in-depth, or at a specific moment.

And it is more interesting because in other translations the term or terms used are in the sense of acting with equity or of being fair.

Another thing that I found interesting is that the term equanimity, or equanimity, has to do with some fields that I study for a while, one of them being stoicism, but I don't remember seeing or hearing that word or concept in reading or audio. That is, if the Bible used in the preaching (or preaching) I heard was a version other than King James, I would not have the memories I have.

That said, despite having heard the concept in the past, when I read that “equanimity” (en-us: equanimity) would be the word of the week, for some moments I confused it with equity/equality. And not that it doesn't have to do, but researching more, and reading some of the texts produced, I realized that the term, the concept, goes further.

It is about mental balance, it is about discipline, about self-control, constancy, impartiality, etc., in relation to ourselves, our feelings, about events and about people.

It's about maintaining your spirits even in difficult times, it's about maintaining sobriety even in intoxicating moments.

The importance of the practice of Equanimity.

In the last 3 or 4 years I have been studying a lot about stoicism, in addition to other fields that I mentioned in my last text on accountability and I have studied this and more because I believe that at the moment we live, with so much information, so many events, so many ups, and downs, with many things becoming more superficial and volatile, the world changing at a sometimes crazy pace, being calm in spirit, seeing events with a calmer, more balanced look is essential.

In my view, when putting this in perspective, it is necessary and important to use all available resources, whether tools or routines or even to study and seek to practice concepts that can guide us to a more constant, safer attitude for ourselves.

And keeping in mind the concept of equanimity, trying to practice it is a good way to deal with some processes in life.

As I said, I did not think much about the term and the concept of equanimity in the sense of knowing that it was equanimity, but I can say that it is a concept that I have been trying to apply to myself for life and for a while now.

Looking at certain situations, being in certain situations and seeking balance, trying to be constant and prudent at various times, especially in the most difficult ones, is a practice that I have tried to exercise.

I have to say that it is not easy, I often see myself and I know that many people also find themselves in unjust, tumultuous, conflicting situations, in which blood boils, in which exaggerated, extreme, negative, and harmful acts are performed, against us or against disadvantaged people. They are also often provoked by people who want to get things from us by force, or want to manipulate and curtail us. And all of this makes us lose our balance.

But in my short life, I can say that acting with balance, letting the anger, the hurt, the discouragement have subsided, or simply following the part of it, moving away, is the best solution. This does not mean accepting everything, it does not mean allowing yourself to be stepped on, quite the contrary, but sometimes reacting, responding in the heat of the moment is dangerous.

I speak of conflicting situations, but I could also speak of tempting situations, proposals that are supposed to be irrefutable, but which can have a dear price in the end.

Keeping a calm mind even when we really want something that is supposed to be positive, considering all the consequences is also important, even if it is not easy either.
So I can say that acting equally, exercising equanimity is essential, even if it is not easy, and not only in relation to other people, but in relation to us, we often judge ourselves too much, positively or negatively, and sometimes even when it is in a positive way because perhaps our judgment is detached from the real reality, we end up harming ourselves. So looking at ourselves impartially, making a thoughtful, measured, balanced analysis of ourselves is important.

I have already said that it is not easy, and I say more, it is not fast, especially for those who have access to these postures, these ways of seeing the world after going through several opposing moments, after allowing or being forced to act aggressively. and instant throughout life, but it is necessary.

The world is unbalanced, either as a result of the actions of unbalanced people in various areas and in various ways, or by events beyond human interference, or an unregulated consequence of human activity over time and the history of mankind, or even because of the action of people who strategically produce and drive the chaos.

I can also bring this conversation to the context of cryptocurrencies and investments, in which in a bull run scenario, or in a more bearish market (in decline), many people rush to buy or sell without reflecting, without researching, buying cryptocurrencies, and financing projects rotten, without foundation, supporting projects and market manipulators, or selling ahead of time, taking losses, and creating cascading effects that can even affect the plans of more experienced people.

And it is in these moments that the concept of equanimity is important.

Because if we don't act in relation to the world, in relation to events, for this to change, for things to take a different course, let us do it differently, at least in relation to ourselves, for our own good (I'm not talking about doing things strategically wrong to benefit, right?), because if we do that, if we are less of an unbalanced person, it will be something important in the long run, for us and for the people around us.

In conclusion, I would like to say that although I have not thought much about this concept in this way in recent years, I intend to put the concept of equanimity into practice, reflect on it, and do what I can to be a more balanced person for me and the world.

What about you? Do you want to practice equanimity and be a more balanced person?

Colossenses 4:1 - Biblia King James.

Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
Colossenses 4:1 |Colossians 4:1- King James Bible.

It's really hard to stay calm, as you say: a crazy world. ! ... But it is the healthiest for your own emotional well-being.

Greetings
