Expenses and Detty December!

Expenses! Expenses!! Expenses!!!

It’s 11days into the most festive month of the year and while the income is not directly proportional to the money expended, it does not change the reality of responsibilities.

...And with the month of December comes more and more responsibilities- I must add.

From regular car maintenances to house upkeep to family responsibilities to social requirements to personal needs to miscellaneous expenses, the list is indeed endless.

They say let’s have fun, celebrate, party, and spend some cash in the spirit of the season and have a Detty December but all that boils down to expenses that suck your funds with a massive funnel under the disguise of enjoyment... Lol…

Detty December is a popular trend used to refer to the buoyant way of spending in December.

Don’t get me wrong! I am not against all the above but the idea of incurring more expenses than income during this period is a bit unsettling for me.

A lot of people work so hard all year long just to spend it all in one month or even a few days of the month, then start afresh with the grind in the New Year.

In a way, this also influences the price of things during this time of the year.

From the price of food and fruit materials in our local markets to the cost of electronics and general supplies in our supermarkets to the price of general utilities to the cost of overall maintenance to even the cost of transportation locally and internationally, everything is on the high side.

Thinking out loud…

What if we did not travel as much in December? What if we did not have to wait all year to spend all that money in a few days of one month? What if we did not have to increase demand for certain items which eventually leads to inflation in price and in some cases decrease in supply or hoarding of such items?

What if?

At the end of the day, December is another month of the year and it is advisable not to wait for just one month to pile up having fun and consequently our expenses.

I wish you all a minimal expense and a fun-filled December.

Thanks for your precious time!

You talk about December like a damnation, when it should just go in the direction of your Money Management.
Who says that you MUST spend all that money? Who says that all your friends deserve a gift that in the most part of the cases ends up in an armchair and becomes the "lost gift" for the following year?
Who says that you must travel?

Establish your own budget, and the areas where you are going to spend/invest money in.
I say spend because in the most part of the scenarios, money spend during Christmas vacations are just thrown away. BUT, money during holidays can be invested as well. A journey, for example, may be intended both to go and visit some people and in the same time looking for job opportunities and relocation opportunities?

With gifts, what about starting making gifts that YOU would like to receive so the next year, it may happen that some of your friends start making you gifts in that direction? Think about books. If you are a strong reader, and you start gifting books...well, you got the point.

So, I would say that if you stop seeing the gift creation as an empty expenditure, and you start see it as a chance, I bet that you will feel lighter in this period.

I believe damnation is a strong word to use. I only highlighted the realities of the people in my locality based on what I have observed and the experiences of people shared.

You raised valid points on proper budgeting and gift creation alternatives- financial management, which are all great ideas but the truth is not everyone practices this.

My post was not directed to people who properly manage resources but for those that end up incurring a lot of expenses during this period just because it is December.

Thank you for stopping by.
