Don't Be Late, As That is Lame

avatar

While I'm checking posts here on HIVE, very often I see posts about people's personal experiences and their first steps in the crypto world... Of course, that drops me back in my first days of crypto which makes me reflect on things that I have learned from others... These days, I try to spread my humble experience that maybe can help some of you out there...

One of the main traps in crypto is regret... That we didn't do something that we could do it, that we have missed some opportunity... All that leads that after a certain time we do the opposite, trying to get on EVERY wagon of the train and FOMO in everything that comes in our way... So, to avoid this stuff, the first important thing is to stop regretting missed opportunities... It happened in the past, and let us leave it there... If we have no regrets, we will not lose additional money by FOMOing...

But... All this doesn't need that we have to give up with investing (time and/or money, both assets are important) in new things... It means that we should keep the ear on the ground, follow the signs, check the pulse of the markets, of the new ideas... When we collect enough information, then we should decide on going into something... This doesn't mean to FOMO in, as it requires collecting information and research, which isn't the case with FOMOing...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

I have many examples from my past where I had an ear on the ground, but I have stopped with my research after scratching the surface and not going deep... The perfect example is my encounter with Ethereum back in 2017 when it was around $10-$20... I have heard that it's a "supercomputer" that will run smart contracts and improve the potential of the blockchain tech in those moments, but I didn't dive deeper... I didn't understand the potential and I didn't buy any tokens then... Lucky for me, a couple of months later, my friend convinced me to start mining ETH... The price already went 10x, but it still had more to show, and it's still here and kicking...

For another example, I don't have to search too far... Back in 2017, I was in close contact with a friend who was doing website, SEO, and stuff like that... He knew that I have started with ETH mining, but he had his doubts about investing in crypto... When BTC mooned to 17K USD when everyone was in a FOMO-hype mood, he decided to buy some... and he did it... and got completely disappointed with the result as the whole crypto went into the long bear market... Why did he get late? Because he didn't do the research before and made a decision... He left himself in that "indecision limbo" for months without taking NO ACTION... The same mistake I made with ETH...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

Another example... Some of my friends here on HIVE... I came here through Splinterlands 3 years ago and stayed for a completely different reason... But, for the first 1-2 years I was preaching about Splinterlands, doing my daily giveaways (still doing them... currently at the 900th round!), but most of my friends here on HIVE ignored the game... It was a good investment opportunity, cards were cheap, you could win a lot of cards in rewards chests (there were no potions, not tokens inside... just cards!)... And then, early this year, almost ALL my friends here jumped on the Splinterlands! It's still not too late to start, but there was a great time to do it earlier... Why does that happen? Well, maybe I didn't "present" the game as it should be done, so I am partly responsible for that... But, on the other side, it's the same thing as the previous 2 examples... The lack of research leads to a "bad decision"... Without input, you can't make the right decision... But, what changed early this year? The game has made some big changes, opened a lot more possible income streams, some people did their research and joined the game... The rest just FOMO-ed in following others... Others decided for them... Will that work well for them? Time will tell...

In a conclusion, FOMO can be that push in the right direction, but in many cases, it's the push in the wrong direction... So, be very careful with doing that... In my opinion, it's much better to DYOR when you have the first information, the first rumor about some project/game/token, and made a decision... Don't leave it hanging there...

You will miss a lot of opportunities even with following these "rules", but when that happens, just move on... There will be many others that you have to research and go for them early!

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

There is only so much time but yea there is a lot of regret. I also have some regrets about things that happen in the past but I use them as a learning experience. It doesn't really affect my current actions but I do look back on things sometimes.

Yeah... Those "mistakes" should be exactly as you said a learning experience... No regrets as it was just one more experience for better decisions in the future... ;)

I will also not "pitch" the game as such. I will just like to show the opportunity and they need to decide themselves.

Everybody seen enough post on Splinterland's and yet they ignored it.

It's human tendency they go for "high claims" and most time fail to get results instead of "low and steady claims" that has future potentials.

I will just like to show the opportunity and they need to decide themselves.

That's the point of showing the opportunities... Sharing YOUR experience with others, but the final decision is on others... The problem is that a lot of people think that YOU are "pitching" them and find YOU responsible for their future failures... But, OK... I like to be conservative as much as possible to avoid that to happen...

It's human tendency they go for "high claims" and most time fail to get results instead of "low and steady claims" that has future potentials.

Exactly! For example, Splinterlands wasn't that interesting as it had slow growth, and not as it is last 2 months... And there is an illusion that EVERYONE who STARTS to play now will be successful, which is far away from the truth... The most successful players are those who started to play the game 4 years ago and not now...

There is no worse thing than living in regret... When I see my teenage son "self-pitying" I always have to STOP it... It's like an addiction... self-pity, excuses, regrets... living in the past, locked in chains...

That's true! The winners will be those who stick to this blockchain/crypto craziness and do not give up! :)

Others decided for them

I think that this is one of the reasons why there is so much fomo and fud in the crypto world. People jump on a project and then they write about it and shill it until others pick it up and in turn talk about it. This virality is what ultimatively creates fomo and fud in one direction or the other. I think we should trust more our own judgment and take things slowly, talk with like minded people, brainstorm (always great to do that with you ;-) ) and then take decisions without hurry.

Yeah... You are right... The worst thing is that people FOMO into something without knowing what it is and how it works and then SHILL that to others... and then we have people that FOMO on FOMO... lol... Those that got into something that was lured by people who have no idea what they are doing... lol...

brainstorm (always great to do that with you ;-) )

For brainstorming, you need at least 2 people, and you need an open mind from all participants... Very often, that's the hardest thing... To accept others' ideas and different opinions, implement them in your work/thinking... But, that's a great way of learning stuff as it mixes different points of view and thinking "outside the box"!

I believe we all missed opportunities for not entering early. Doubt plays a role sometimes. Even if one does the research, in disruptive technologies territory there's always an element of chance. The newer the tech and team behind, the higher the risk. But usually that's how huge profits can be made. One just needs to have the stomach to be ok with the risk. Sometimes it's a gamble...

Sometimes it's a gamble...

Agree with that... and would just like to add one thing... More research usually means LESS gambling... Knowledge helps in reducing the risk... That's why FOMO is a pure gamble as there is no research... just my 2c...

Yep! That's true.

When we regret for missed opportunities we again waste time in our life so better we keep trying and things that doesn't meant to be simply ignore and move on. Your have shared such wise words that I appreciate and agreed, thank you!

Exactly! We should just learn the lesson and move on!

We already have mountains to climb, as we work towards our goals and when we bog ourselves down with regrets; it adds another obstacle to that climb.

Thanks for the Saturday mojo @ph1102

Nicely said, indeed! It's a climb and regrets are our not-needed baggage...

FOMO is real and I fall to it several times.
But now I know better and simply building up is my way of moving forward.

Oh, I'm not immune to FOMO either... It's easier to control it after some time, but still, it can hit hard... lol...
