Feel Free to Insult Me! - Free Speech Thoughts

avatar

This blog post will be short as I want to share with you an interesting video that I have found a few days ago... It isn't that new (I mean the speech), but the video was newly created and I saw it for the first time... As YouTube tends to bury these kinds of videos, I suppose that many of you didn't see it...

It is a speech by Rowan Atkinson (whom many of you know as an actor who "invented" Mr.Bean) about the free speech that he took in 2012 as a part of the campaign called “Reform Section 5”. He did this speech in Parliament and according to Reformsection5 website post, it went viral back in the day... Ironically, if you check the link you will find a post where all links to YT videos are unavailable... Strange?

You can check the video above that was released just a few days ago that I have found in my "feed", listened and bookmarked to share with you guys... To my surprise, when I checked the video today part of it was without the sound (you will notice around the 3rd minute)... Maybe it's kind of a protection of "property rights", or just another "coincidence"...

Another irony regarding that is that Mr. Atkinson is talking about the right to "insult others", about the freedom of speech, spreading the message freely, and then, another video is "silenced"...

Anyways, I have found another video where the sound works, so you can check it out (that is probably the "original")...

This topic was interesting for me as I had some personal experiences regarding it... I have a problem that many times I say what I think in-loud, and the message isn't always pleasant... There are some issues out there and I feel the necessity to point them out, and try to fix them as soon as possible... Unfortunately, I found that a lot of people are keener to listen to "sweet lies" than to hear the truth about certain things... Ignoring some problem will not make that problem gone, but addressing it, and working on it, could solve the issue...

I suppose that the legendary phrase by Jack Nicholson from the movie A Few Good Men is a very often repeated phrase these days...

...but someone has to point out that the King is naked... That's why platforms such as HIVE are crucial... We have to have a place where we can share the truth... This is our Zion... Our last post...

What do you think about Mr. Atkinson's speech? Are we becoming too "soft"? Is that stopping us from progressing and growing?

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

Unfortunately, I found that a lot of people are keener to listen to "sweet lies" than to hear the truth about certain things.

True, and some of them are even angry when someone tells the truth. Like, "I know it. You don't need to say that.". After that, they ignore that matter 😴

Actually, what you said is a "softer scenario", when they know... but the result is the same... ignoring the problem... and being offended by the truth...

He said a lot of things many of us agree with here on Hive. :) Uploading it on 3speak should be a safer way to prevent future potential censorship from the likes of YT.

Yes, I think we're indeed getting way 'too soft'. The reason why I still clearly don't know. The truth is always self evident but we somehow turn our face the other way and comfort ourselves with 'sweet lies'.

I suppose that "people in charge" are creating millions of laws and rules to not offend anyone and that creates the "softening" effect... It's like those labels on shampoo... "don't drink it"... 😃

Lol, that could be the reason. Everybody is put in line and has a 'mental filter' installed on what to avoid.

Sweet lies is everywhere and is much preferred than truth. I don't know why we tell everyone to be honest but honesty is a rarity. These days many get offended for the simplest things in life and it's exhausting to navigate ourselves in this kind of society. It's like walking in a minefield that somehow, there's almost no safe path to walk.

That's a perfect comparison... walking in a minefield... You never know how will the other side react and the smallest things offend people... It has no sense, but it is like that... we need to take some steps back...

It's good to watch/listen to these kinds of videos occasionally... just to catch up with reality and confirm our beliefs...

For me, the most important thing is spiritual work on yourself.

There is no greater victory than when you defeat social stereotypes.

I like such challenges. People have a fear of rejection and therefore follow the path of least resistance.
I am always for the truth. I work with children and that's how I teach them. That's how you gain trust. There are few brave people. Thank you for this post! 👋🚀

I work with children and that's how I teach them. That's how you gain trust.

You are right about children... and when they come to adolescence, you have another training... patience, and preserving... You think that everything that you built is ruined, but the hope stays... One day, they will remember how important was to have trust between parents and children...
Sorry, I digressed from the topic... 😀

Thanks for checking my post! Have a great week!
