When James first walked into my room that Tuesday afternoon, I could tell that all wasn’t well with him, so I tried to find out what the problem was but he just wouldn’t say. All effort had proven to be futile so I had decided to just let it be when all of a sudden he started crying.

“Did someone die?” I asked because this was the first time I was seeing my friend be this emotional.

After pulling himself together, James opened up to me about how his father wanted him to come home and continue his schooling there due to the insecurities happening close to where he currently was schooling.

I was going to ask him why he was crying but experience has taught me to remain quiet and just listen, any form of interruption from me could absolutely ruin everything and make him change his mind about telling me anything.

It didn’t take long though before I found out the real reason behind his tears. James has always been unlucky when it came to love, he always told us that he has never experienced what true love was until few months ago and he met Aisha.

“I can’t leave Aisha, I just can’t”. James said and that was when the whole thing started making sense to me.

If we were in a different country, James could have told his dad about Aisha and maybe the man might reconsider and just let his boy continue schooling at his old school but this was Africa where majority of the parents were against dating, they only believed in marriage and nothing else. So telling his dad was no even an option.

“So what are you going to do?” I asked with a very calm voice because I now understood what the problem was.

“I don’t know but I seriously can’t leave her, I won’t”. James swore.

But him and I knew that wasn’t true and within a matter of weeks, he would be saying his final goodbyes to her.
