When news of Emeka getting arrested by the police with charges of him being an internet fraudster got to the village, Ikenna went on his kneels to thank God that he had not allowed himself to be pressured by his parents. When he got home that day, he could tell they too had heard the news and were ashamed that they had once compared that boy to their son.

About six months ago, Emeka had returned to the village with a flashy car. The car was one of those ones with an open roof which Emeka used to spray money all over the place as the villagers chased after his car while trying to catch as much money as they could.

Ikenna, a good friend of Emeka had been shocked as to how his friend made it this big within just six months of him being in the big city. The explanation Emeka had given to him that evening had sounded kind of suspicious, too suspicious that Ikenna had decided to distant himself from him.

When Ikenna got home that night, his parents had tried to talk him into leaving his farming business behind and following Emeka back to the city.

“You can buy as many lands as you want for your farm when you return back in six months.” They said to Ikenna, but the young man had been adamant. Ikenna had refused to do as his parents said, and when Emeka returned back to the city a week later, his parents had been furious with him and they made it known to him.

Ikenna had ignored and continued with his farm business. He wasn’t making enough money for him to get himself a flashy car with an open roof where he could spray as much money as he wanted, but he was making money. And though he never for once regretted the decision he took, Ikenna wouldn’t deny the fact that there were nights when thoughts do cross his mind.

“Did I make a wrong decision?” He would always ask himself.

But if Ikenna was having any doubts, it all became cleared when they all heard the news of how Emeka was nothing but a fraudster, popular known as yahoo boy. The police had finally caught up with him after he stole the sum of two million dollars from a commissioner while impersonating someone else.

That night, when Ikenna went to bed, he had just one thing in his mind and it wasn’t a thought, it was a confirmation. “I had done the right thing.”

Thank you for posting this story in the Ink Well community. Sometimes it's hard to follow our own sense when others recommend a different path, especially when the others are family. In this case, Ikenna learned a valuable life lesson: stay true to your own principles. And thank you for engaging with other writers in the community.

We hope to see more stories from you.

There is a saying, "Be true to thyself". Sometimes that sentiment is rephrased, but the meaning is the same. We can't judge our actions by what others are doing, or others are saying. We all have an internal sensor that tells us the right thing to do. Although he was tempted to ignore that inner sense, Ikenna held strong. He was true to his sense of the correct path.

The story is nicely organized and well told. Thank you.

There are such special beings! That's Ikenna. Beings who know how to distinguish true wealth and who don't let themselves be carried away by the fatuous glitter of easy money. Nice character, @prayzz
