The people of Abacha

Everyone in the village of Abacha were beginning to get worried. The young Queen had been in labor for the past two hours and yet no one had heard anything from her or the midwives who went in with her. They all prayed to the gods to grant her safe delivery because a lot was at stake. The King was critically ill and it was without doubt that he wouldn't make it. He needed an heir, no matter how old he or she was, they just needed someone from the King's bloodline to occupy the throne or else, a great calamity would befall them all.

The people of Abacha were guided by many rules but they paid more attention to two of those rules: the King must not die without an heir or every first child in the whole village would die and the immediate termination of twins. Great consequences had been shown to befall anyone who broke this rules as the gods were ones without mercy. And that was why as the King got old, the people of Abacha feared for their lives or the lives of their loved ones.

The gods had finally answered the prayers of the King. The King's youngest wife had confirmed to the king that she was indeed with child and the King had held a great feast. Dignitaries from other kingdoms had been invited to come feast and merry, the great king was finally going to have an heir. That was nine months ago and now the young Queen was in labor.

The villagers had lit up incense all round the palace, it was a way of keeping away bad spirits from the baby but two hours after the midwives had gone in with the queen, the fear that had left them nine months ago was starting to creep back in. They were about questioning the gods when one of the midwives rushed out of the hut, dancing.

“A boy!! The gods has given us an heir” the midwife screamed at the top of her voice and the people rejoiced. They all jumped to their feet and danced like never before. But their celebration was cut short when another of the midwives ran out of the hut to call back the first midwife who had gone out. Both midwives had rushed back into the hut, leaving the villagers wondering what may have gone wrong. But they didn't need to wonder for long, because ten minutes later, the first midwife who had come out earlier, came out again. This time, with a sad face.

She knew the people were eager to know who had happened and she wasted no time in telling them.

“The Queen has given birth to twins” She said. The screams that followed next was not that of celebration, it was that of wailing. Some women took off their wrappers and threw them naked selves to the floor while crying bitterly.

When the elders heard of the news, they were thrown into a state of confusion.

They knew if they killed the twins, the gods would take away their first child because the king would have no heir and if they spared the twins, a great calamity would befall them.

What were they to do?
