Odds and Ends — 4 January 2022

I posted back in May (Saying Goodbye to a Good Friend) when our lovely dog Bacci left this vale of tears.

Bacci could never be replaced but our household wasn’t the same without a sweet dog. A few days ago we added a British Labrador (sometimes called English Labrador) puppy to the family. Meet Lucy:

Coronavirus News, Analysis, and Opinion:

U.S. Struggles to Avoid Widespread Shutdowns

Officials across the United States, from President Biden on down, have been insisting that they are no longer in the shutdown business, and will not order any closures to contain the latest surge in coronavirus cases.
But Omicron may be taking the decision out of their hands. So many workers are testing positive or calling in sick that businesses, schools, government agencies and more are being crippled by staff shortages that may force them to close some operations anyway.

Is the ‘smoking gun’ in Trump’s Jan. 6 attempted coup hiding in plain sight?

While America was preoccupied last week with getting home from the holidays or lining up around the block for COVID-19 testing, there was a bombshell development in the investigation to learn just how far Donald Trump was prepared to go in turning the Capitol Hill chaos of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection into a coup to end U.S. democracy.
Thanks to a somewhat surprising source — the disgraced former New York police commissioner Bernard Kerik, a Team Trump insider — we now know the name of a document with the potential to become a ‘smoking gun.’ Just its title suggests Trump was planning an unprecedented abuse of presidential power — to use the Big Lie of nonexistent 2020 election fraud to undo the results of a free and fair vote.

Pro-Trump Internet Descends Into Infighting

The far-right firebrands and conspiracy theorists of the pro-Trump Internet have a new enemy: each other.
After months of failing to disprove the reality of Trump’s 2020 presidential election loss, some of the Internet’s most popular right-wing provocateurs are grappling with the pressures of restless audiences, saturated markets, ongoing investigations and millions of dollars in legal bills.
The result is a chaotic melodrama, playing out via secretly recorded phone calls, personal attacks in podcasts, and a seemingly endless stream of posts on Twitter, Gab and Telegram calling their rivals Satanists, communists, pedophiles or ‘pay-triots’ — money-grubbing grifters exploiting the cause.

I don't typically screenshot Trump endorsements but this merits an exception:

The puppy is awesome!
Woof!!!

As for anti-government violence - not that it is desirable or should be a measure of first resort, but what options do you believe citizens have when the government decides to go off the rails?

I guess that would depend on one’s definition of off the rails.

Good point.

That was a bit vague.

Let's define off the rails as operating outside of legal or even ethical norms, tyrannical oppression, disregard for citizens' will or grievances.

Well, that’s not the case in the U.S. so a lot of insurrectionists are going to do time behind bars.

But violence against governments like 1939 Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, etc. would be justified. Currently, Nicaragua, Eritrea, and a few other tyrannies come to mind.

First off, can you name one person involved in the 6 January events - if that is what you are referring to - who faces insurrection charges (or anything of the sort)? To qualify this as an insurrection is specious, IMHO.

Next moving to the nature of the regime in the US of A. Best I can tell, while the trappings of the Republic founded in 1776 still remain, in reality we live in a completely different society. It is one ruled by oligarchy, basically, that oligarchy being largely globalist and not even based in the country. And yes, tyrannical actions are part of that regime's repertoire. So if you think it is all that different from the good ole' USSR - well, I am not going to say it is exactly the same, but similarities are certainly there.
