Odds and Ends — 9 October 2021
I’m old enough to remember the excitement, 50+ years ago, of the new Sears catalog arriving. Moms in my neighborhood would talk to each other, sharing what they hoped to talk their husbands into buying. Seems like another world now. I always wondered about the huge variety of electric motors, pages and pages of them. Was it maybe a holdover from a generation earlier when, early in the century, many households had multiple appliances/gadgets that didn’t come with their own motors and folks would carry their only motor from one gadget to the next?

Trump’s coup plot was worse than anyone knew
I don't think we know the full scope of what was going on with Barr and Trump during this period despite Barr's self-serving recitations to several authors of books on the final days. But it's clear that he knew that Trump was out of control and he decided to jump off the sinking ship before it went under…
Trump himself inappropriately called Rosen and his deputy nine times, and met with him personally several more, the final denouement coming just days before the January 6th insurrection in which he literally said, “one thing we know is you, Rosen, aren’t going to do anything to overturn the election.” As usual, he said the quiet part out loud.
Biden Declines Trump Request to Withhold Records
The White House on Friday formally blocked an attempt by former President Donald Trump to withhold documents from Congress related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, setting up a legal showdown between the current and former president over executive privilege.

EPA Finally Regulating ‘Chemical Recycling’
Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, formally announced it was considering tighter regulations for pyrolysis and gasification — controversial processes that are associated with ‘chemical recycling.’
Industry advocates have named these processes as key steps toward building a circular economy — one that minimizes waste — but environmental groups have called them an ‘industry shell game’ meant to keep single-use plastics in production.
