Dream of a Nation vs Joblessness

The hype about the Padma bridge has reduced to zero. In another story, the hype was hammered to the ground due to some unexpected incidents; a bike accident killing two is the most notable, and TikTok mania is thought to be responsible for the whole chaos. Also, a bit of unwillingness to cooperate of the speed-loving bikers added fuel to the flame— after all, it’s a dream (not a wet one) of the whole nation, so, you can’t complain.

Emphasising the significance of the bridge, it was a dream of the entire nation, a promise made by the honourable PM and demand of the situation as a whole. Certainly, it's a sign that our communication system is developing and people using this route will be able to save a few hours traveling throughout the districts. So, it can be a game changer in how this particular region is economically dealing. And it’s been found that the land prices have gone high right from the announcement of the making of the bridge and it’s no secret it will go higher in the coming days.

But does that mean people in these areas are going to be economically solvent— all for that bridge?

Earlier, when the vehicles used to be transported to the other side of the river using ferry boat, there were thousands of hawkers crawling at every inch. Thousands of people used to earn their livelihoods feeding the hungry passengers, short-term wanderers— a mini business hub it was; those ferry terminals. As of today, they are left empty— no bus, no truck, nothing! The ferry boats are anchored at the terminals— once so busy in the river, whirling the water on its way and crossing the mighty Padma with dominance, those valuable water transports are now left at the mercy of the rust. Probably they will be deployed for other purposes soon, but, for now, they are like lonely and haunted houses remembering the crowd they once used to carry from here to there.

Well, they are government property, so, they won’t cause any financial trouble as our government is too rich to bother about such trivial wastage. Now that these ferry terminals are abandoned, how are those hawkers dealing with their lives?

A few days ago, I crossed the river— not by that hyped terrain as it’s not feasible for us to use that route to reach our destination. I was expecting heavy traffic as usual that; sometimes takes up to 12 hours to cross the river, including the waiting time at the terminal and then crossing it by the ferry boats. Putting me to surprise, it only took less than one hour— something that I have experienced after ages. Even the ferry master had to wait for enough number of vehicles to start the journey. I was surprised and excited simultaneously.

Similar to that other route, this one is also kind of desolate. I didn’t notice the crowd of hawkers it once had— only a few of them were roaming around in an attempt to sell the commodities. As the number of vehicles is a few, those sellers are struggling (close to fighting) to secure their spot at the door front of the buses. And I am sure they aren’t making enough to support their families.
So, if this continues and the government takes no steps to rehabilitate them with any alternatives, chaos will ensue— probably we will see a rise in crime in these areas, who knows.

After all, survival comes first, and trust me, goons or not; nobody wants to see his family go to bed hungry.
