Cassava and Masala Pumpkin with Smoked Fish || The Gift of Food || #DashOutSunday
After all the festivities in December and all the fancy calorie-filled that came with it, we're definitely trying to get back to basics in terms of cooking. This also means not buying any ingredients, but instead using up things we already have at home. It helps a lot when our parents often feel like they need to gift us ingredients to cook with. Sundays meal was built from exactly that. Food items we got as a gift or from somewhere or someone.
Starting with the cassava, which we got from a recent trip with friends where we made cassava soup. The leftover pieces came back home with us. Along with the cassava we had pumpkin from my parents garden and smoked fish which my mother gifts us from time to time.
With all of these gifted food items already in the fridge, all we had to do was start cooking.
Co-chef @tanjakolader started by cooking and then frying the cassava as she does it best.
After that we cut up the pumpkin into pieces. The smoked fish was already pre-shredded, so all we had to do with that was thaw it out.
It's also very delicious to eat as is, but I managed to contain myself.
With all the ingredients ready, I heated up some garlic, chopped onions and chopped garlic in a pot, with most importantly a generous amount of masala powder. The masala is also something I got from someone, a work colleague in this case. Her mom grinds the powder by hand and it taste much better than store bought.
Then I threw the smoked fish in there.
Followed by the pumpkins. Mixed up everything and let it sit for about 15 min, while we danced to some classical funk music in the kitchen.
After a while the pumpkin softens up. The color also became a little bit less orange, making it seem brownish, but I can assure you it was delicious.
The fact that all of the items in the dish came from somewhere or someone as a gift, makes it a unique experience filled with a warm feeling.
What gifted foods have you recently eaten?
A lot of plant based free-ness. Can’t get better than that. Was this breakfast ? That fish looks real chunky, almost thought it was chicken.
I recently got these cookies I’ve been craving, more like a cracker though. Nambu sembei.

Yeah, it gets like that after being smoked over at least 4 hours I think. They also have a select few types of fish they use for the smoking process.
Nice! Do you eat them with a topping or just as is?
As is ! But come to think of it, these would do good in some ice cream, crushed up! 😄 But doubt I will ever try that
