Strolling Through the Jungle, Chilling on the Mountain Top πŸŒ„ Voltz Mountain in Suriname

After the boat trip from hell came the forest hike of champions. As stated in my previous post about my trip deep into the rainforests of Suriname, we traveled long and hard to get to the start of our adventures that weekend.

After a good day of rest, it was time to hike through the forest for about 4 hours to the foot of Voltzberg (Voltz Mountain) which we were about to climb of course. This is not an easy task to say the least. It's not Mount Everest but it does test your perseverance and discipline. Because of this it's not surprising that from the 60 people that got to the island only around 25 took up the mountain climbing challenge. Voltz Mountain is one of the popular mountains in Suriname, frequently visited by tourists, with the right guide.

So there we were at the start of the path. Most not knowing that their lives would change forever, as a natural adventure like this really does change your perspective on life, while giving you a new appreciation for nature and life itself. As I said before the route through the jungle took about 4 hours until we reached the foot of the mountain, where the half hour climb to the top starts.

Even though this was my second time doing this, I was probably more in shape the first time around, making it quite challenging nonetheless pushing forward through leaves, water and mud. Luckily I had fun travel buddies.

IMG_20210910_170850.jpg

For the first two hours I was leading the pack on the trail, and then it happened, the soles of my shoes decided to give up. Thankfully one of my friends had duct tape and rope to McGyver it all back together, making the soles stick until reaching the mountain. On the way back I walked without the soles, but because of the quality of the shoes that wasn't a problem, as the memory foam was neatly stitched under the shoe itself, rendering the main rubber sole that got loose unnecessary.

But enough about my shoe problems. With all my extra handicaps including my jumpers knee thanks to "old" age, I reached the mountain. The climb itself was as challenging as I remembered, having to rest along the way.

If you look closely you can see the bands keeping my shoe together.

And then finally we reached the top!
Insert inspirational quote here. :)
It was surely worth the trip after 5 years.

And even @tanjakolader enjoyed her first time climbing Voltz Mountain. Probably cuz short people have quite a rush when standing at great heights, but still..
Read more about her experience in her own post.

After enjoying the view, some fresh water and taking the required social media pictures, the group departed the top with the dread of having to walk 4 hours back through the same muddy path we travelled to get there. But it was all good because good food and a nice relaxing swim in the river was awaiting us.

Exploring the jungle is not an easy task, but you need to have a lot of experience or have lived in the jungle. And it's amazing how mother earth has such mysterious yet enchanting spaces and yet we humans don't know how to appreciate them. Thanks for this post, great job. Blessings 😊

We made sure to travel in groups of at least two people, exactly because of that reason. Once you get lost and don't know what you're doing, it's game over. The guide always went in front with his machete to cut the trail, making it easier for the less experienced to follow the cut path. But everyone returned home safely, so mission completed successfully.

Even rocky mountains can give you that feeling of nature, all you need to do is climb to the top. :)

I am still trying to figure out what is going on with the that tree and dirt that got lifted up like some kind of carpet. HAHAh the journey finished those kicks clean. Than usually happens to shoes you don't wear often.

I think the wind knocked it down, but nature gave me the perfect resting spot in the shade where the rock was not hot. Already lost 3 pairs of shoes to the Covid period, falling apart because they haven't been worn for about 2 years.

Nice shoe repair, could've gone much worse I guess. That looks like such a beautiful place, perhaps it's where Suriname is hiding all the fruits and vegetables 😁.

Now that I think of it, I didn't see much fruits in the forest. There were lots of mushrooms all around though. Probably some edible.

Sweet another spot to add to my list! But I would prefer to camp up there the night and have more time to explore!

That's on the wish list for if we ever do this trip again. We only need to work out the details of food, sleeping arrangements and going to the potty πŸ™ˆ. But would be heavenly to sleep under the stars there.

Homemade, pre portioned meals and snacks in resealable plastic bags, then if you don't want to take a small shovel to bury your poop, you can then re-sue those plastic bags for it to dispose of it properly...saves so much room and weight and No need to cook...

Shall I come and help..? 🀣

Whahahaaa hey those are good ideas. Thanks! The shovel won't be as useful as the mountain is solid granite rock. For no.1 we could just designate some shrubs and for no.2 either your idea or something else.

And it's just staying the night, so the next morning would be then the climb down.

Of course you're welcome! πŸ˜„

Well then the only other options are top A) not eat the night before (so there's nothing to come out...) or B) use the plastic bags- sealed up VERY tight...🀣

I think I'll go for option A and maybe try to go the morning of hahahahaa

Well if you do go for option a), then if you need to fall back on option B) then atleast there won't be too much πŸ’© for @rarej to carry...🀣🀣🀣

You have the right idea! We're already planning to spend a night there next time. But the logistics are tricky. Can't take any "weaklings" along, especially with the amount of supplies we would also have to carry. So definitely a smaller group.

Yeah he was walking behind me,,, H,,,
He started in front with the alethic group but due to the shoe malfunction he was behind me πŸ™ˆ.

Yes well if I were you, I would take a spare pair of shoes for him just incase cause you want to be able to see him in front of you at all times and not have to have a 'shoe malfunction'...And some gaff tape and maybe some cable ties too...🀣

Hahahaaa funny thing is, I was thinking the same thing a few days ago, but then for me. I also have some old sneakers that almost fall apart and I knew they wouldn't survive the hike, so I took my newer shoes with me. So I thought "what if I took the old ones with me, I had to have a spare?" πŸ˜…

Well then that could mean that you will have 2 pairs that you won't be able to wear but are carrying the weight...

Hahahaha, @rarej had to carry a bottle of Cola mixed with water from a friend, who offered to help carry the bag because of the extra weight. That extra bottle came in handy when we needed some extra energy πŸ˜‚.
