The Perception of Wealth Can Differ Depending On Your Perspective

When driving home from work yesterday, I came to a stop at one of the many traffic lights along my route. And as usual there was one of the familiar faces. One of the faces going from car to car down the line, asking for money, begging would be the more used term. While I was tired and ready to complain about my regular forty hours a week job, this man was making more than forty hours, earning a fraction of anyone's wage, and yet he was still happy with anything he received. How could he not right? Free money. Well, not actually free. Free from the perspective of those giving it to him, because he really did not do anything of value to earn it. But from his perspective he is putting in time and energy into that which he considers his job. Job may not be the right word to use, but whatever word fits with the thing one does to get some type of income.

To this guy the ultimate financial goal is to have enough money each day to be able to provide himself a meal, and if possible reward himself with some other things beyond that. Does he dream of owning a house, does he want to travel and explore the world? Who knows. We can speculate that he is limited by his potential financial reach, not bothering to think or dream about anything beyond that limit, let alone setting goals of that scale.

The perspective of wealth is a abstract concept in this regard. Depending on where you are standing during your observation of finance, you might have a different perspective and therefore opinion. What helps get insight is trying to see things from the perspective of others. This could possibly help us make better financial decisions, and flourish in the process.

Wauuu I so much like this your post, our understanding about making wealth differs, this is the reason why we can't all be equal financially all due to the way we go about it

Yes, with different perspectives comes different goals, so some will already be happy with a point they reach while other may continue, depending on how high the goal is.

Hi @rarej , lovely article there. Really got me thinking on the idea of different perspective. Really like the twist in perspective and I too had a similar thought once, but on a different topic of volunteering.

Being an avid volunteer in my country, I frequent nursing homes as well as elderly homes to befriend the elderlies and spend time with them. I realised that due to my efforts, some of the elderlies reciprocated. Now the question was, am I doing volunteering because of me championing the cause, or am I doing voluntary work merely for the sake of fitting into the image of being someone that genuinely cares. The former is making an impact to the society, and the latter was actually more so of doing an action in order to be perceived positively by the society. It has been years, but till date I have yet to have a clear answer on this.

This is an excellent example. And even to those elderly people who have little time left, the perspective is probably different.

The former is making an impact to the society, and the latter was actually more so of doing an action in order to be perceived positively by the society

This is something we all struggle with I think. The more we know ourselves, the closer we get to the answer, or the further, depending on our own perception.

Yea... Realised that actually, the world we perceive might be very different depending on different individuals. Sometimes, something that seems purely logical can prove to be relatively abstract to others and vice versa. Probably that is why there is a saying that goes, dealing with humans is the hardest job on earth! haha

Totally agree! I was actually never happier than when I had just enough to get by.
Having said that, panhandling is a real business to some. A lot of those people make bank, I know it's hard and sad to believe, but many are actors. Also, many homeless people don't just go around begging, they recycle too in order to make more money.

It takes thinking of it from different perspectives. Is a man 2 million in debt, who lives in a mansion but it's making just enough to afford his lifestyle, freer than a man who owes nobody, lives in a mobile home, but makes enough to save a little every month? Food for thought...

You hit the nail on the head with this. This all boils down to priorities I think, and what each person deems important. Some people find that they need luxury water out of a glass bottle to drink, while others are perfectly fine with tap water, or the cheaper plastic bottle brand.

And yes, I can imagine that there are some homeless people out there who have figured out how to game the system. !LOL
