# 936 - Canadian Wildlife - Part 31

Today we will continue the series called "Canadian Wildlife".

The Royal Canadian Mint is known by its high quality work and the enormous number of commemorative coins issued each year. Among these commemoratives we find many, individual or in series, under the theme "wildlife".

Canada, with its vast lands and seas, is the home of a varied fauna and that will be showed in this series.

I will try to post land animals, sea animals and birds, in that order.

The thirty first is a 2005 CAD $5 "Lynx"

In 2005 the Royal Canadian Mint issued a set of four coins featuring wildlife designs that were originally created for platinum proof coins. It showed the "Lynx" in four different sizes. This is the first.

It weights 31.1g with silver purity of 99.9% and Proof finish, with Frosted relief against a mirror background. The mintage was 7,942 units. The issue price of the set was CAD $89.95.

The Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) is a medium-sized North American cat that ranges across Alaska, Canada and many of the contiguous United States. It is characterized by its long, dense fur, triangular ears with black tufts at the tips, and broad, snowshoe-like paws.

A specialist predator, the Canada lynx depends heavily on snowshoe hares for food. This leads to a prey-predator cycle, as Canada lynxes respond to the cyclic rises and falls in snowshoe hare populations over the years in Alaska and central Canada. When hares are scarce lynxes tend to move to areas with more hares and tend not to produce litters, and as the numbers of the hare increase, so do the populations of the lynx.

The reverse, designed by Michael Dumas, shows a mother lynx and her three cubs.
