# 943 - Ships on Coins - Part 24
I am very fond of ships on coins.
I know that many people share this fondness. I have a few coins depicting ships.
So, I will post a series called "Ships on Coins" and I will show all the coins that I have on this theme.
There will be no order of presentation or country of issue. As the coins are stored in several places, I will simply search on each place and publish those that I found.
The twenty fourth is a 2015 CAD $20 "S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald".
The Royal Canadian Mint issued in 2014-2015 a small series called "Lost Ships in Canadian Waters".
This CAD $20 coin has 99.99% pure silver, a metal weight of 31.39g (1.01oz) and Colored Proof finish. Its mintage was 4,732 units and the issue price was CAD $109.95.
Immortalized in a popular and well-loved ballad, the legendary story of a freighter's quest to withstand an extreme storm still resonates today. Caught in a "Witch of November" on November 10, 1975, the American freighter S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald endured what many believe to be some of the harshest winter storm conditions on the Great Lakes; towering waves whipped by hurricane-force winds washed over the loaded vessel's deck as the ship sailed along the Canadian coastline, where the crew hoped to find some relief from the worst of the tempest. But under the cover of darkness, cloaked by the raging snow squall, one of the largest vessels of her kind suddenly and quietly slipped beneath the cold waters of Lake Superior near Whitefish Bay, Ontario, taking with her all 29 of her crew.
The reverse was designed by John Horton.

As I recall a Canadian Musician sings a haunting version of the Ballad, thinking... my Dad had his old record album... Yes, it's Gordon Lightfoot, the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Nice colored coin, thanks for sharing.
Do you know what this second ship is doing on this coin?

🔎 There's no second ship, the Fitzgerald had two superstructures; fore and aft. It just looks like two ships with the waves obscuring the midships.

I remember Gordon Lightfoot's recording of the Edmund Fitzgerald. A beautiful coin and a sad story. Thanks for sharing.
Have you noticed that there are two ships on this coin?

You are so right! No, I didn't notice it. So what's the story with the 2nd one?
Gordon Lightfoot had a very popular song about the tragedy of the American freighter S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, so many lives lost...
I have never heard about this song. I will search the internet...
