How Wide Do You Measure - Just One Thing

When we measure something like a cupboard or fridge we often measure the height, the depth and the width and then this allows us to know whether the item is going to fit in its intended area, whether it will fit in the doorway or whether we are going to have to custom make an area to accommodate.

Or should we be measuring the height, depth and width of the space and then finding something that will fit the space rather than having to re-modify or enlarge an area that was not purpose made and if modified would not really look and feel right as a result of compromising the integrity of the space

This brings me back to a post I wrote the other day about extending ourselves a little too far
How wide is your reach, have you over extended and do you need to reign yourself in a bit to make sure that you accommodate the environment you intend. As much as it may be appealing to have a great width in your receptive audience and projected opportunities, are we ultimately diluting our approach by having to modify for set groups, intended audience.

By utilising the space we have available we are then able to consolidate and retain integrity. We are able to cap off at that point and move onto the next step without compromise, without changing the shape of what we intended and without having to make bandaid approaches to making something fit.

Back to the Fridge or that sideboard or cupboard, if we modify an area to accommodate an oversize object then we are ultimately reducing the integrity and will undoubtedly have to look at further modifications to make sure that other things fit the space surrounding.

In a business sense, although it is good to modify a business approach to fit with the surrounding, ultimately a foundation was laid and that foundation should never be disturbed, so the modifications we make are always within the parameters that we set from the outset, if we change those parameters then we are changing the business model and if we change the business model then we are somewhat compromising the integrity of the business and removing any opportunity for consolidation, because once we start modifying one aspect then we will find that their aspects need to be modified, and could potentially loose site of what the business was in the first place.

Likened to Politicians

A person enters politics at the bottom rung of the ladder, they have great ideas and ideals and a strong sense of justice, this most likely will get them to the second rung, however to get to the third rung a compromise needs to happen and so on and so forth, by the time they start reaching the top rung of their career they have made some many compromises that their initial strong set of ideas, ideals and motivations have become so far dissipated that they no longer have a sense of why they entered Politics in the first place. They have stretched themselves so far that they no longer contain their initial level of justice.

So keep a sense of the tunnel, stay focused and don’t allow yourself to be distracted, don’t swing off to the left side and widen your berth until you have a strong consolidated direction that contains initial motivation, once that consolidation is set, then and only then should you try a side arm and widen your scope to include another aspect of your ideas.

In other words it is great to spread oneself wide, but only do this once firm direction has been attained and maintained otherwise your greater width will not allow you to see the goal posts that you set out to see in the first place
