I think a 1-2 month push every once in a while where people can get to know what you are about is important. Once people know you and you connect with a community, consistency isn’t as important here. Not like other social media.

I've never felt that taking a break here hurts my engagement or rewards. Quite the contrary actually. I feel forcing it and writing when I’m not feeling inspired hurts the most

You're right, but do you notice that when you take a break sometimes, your posts loses engagement? When it's longer you might even lose your manual voters too. But basically maybe I tilted more to newbies as this particular tend to affect them more.
However when people are connected more you're right, they don't need that much consistency. I actually need to turn up everyday to maintain traction
