Tickets for the three teams were confirmed earlier. The name of Kolkata Knight Riders as the fourth team was also almost final. Still, mathematically, the chances of the current champions Mumbai Indians survived. But in the end nothing dramatic happened. Kolkata got the play-off ticket, leaving Mumbai behind as the net run rate.
Delhi Capitals are on top with 20 points in 14 matches of the first phase. After that Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings have equal 16 points. However, Chennai is at number two and Bangalore at number three as it is ahead in net run rate. And Kolkata is at number four with 14 points equal to Mumbai.
There is a one-day break in the IPL at the end of the round robin league game. The play-off round of the title fight will start from Sunday. Chennai and Delhi will face the top two teams in the qualifier-1 match. The next day, Bangalore in number three and Kolkata in number four will play in the eliminator match.
The winner of the qualifier-1 match will go straight to the final. However, the losing team will not be left out. They will be waiting for the winning team of the eliminator match. There will be a qualifier-2 fight between these two teams. The winning team of that match will get the second ticket of the final. The final match of this year's event will be on October 15.
